Campaign - Throttle Body Inspection/Replacement
No: SB113Ref:
Issue: 1
Date: 10/17/03
SERVICE ACTION
Throttle Body Inspect and Replace
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
Freelander (LN) 2A353298 to 2A399999
2A200000 to 2A214002
Build Date 05 Sept 2001 to 23 May 2002
SITUATION:
THROTTLE BODY ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE ILLUMINATES MIL LAMP
Manufacturing concerns on Freelander throttle body electrical contacts in the affected VIN range can cause conditions leading to a MIL illumination. In some circumstances the vehicle within the above VIN range may revert to limp home mode or exhibit other symptoms. Increased resistance in the circuit can result in the Engine Management System being unable to determine the position of the throttle plate. Vehicle symptoms may take one or more of the following forms:
^ MIL lamp is illuminated and typically fault codes P1628, P1629 or P1636 can be stored.
^ In Park or Neutral the engine rpm may hunt between 2500 and idle speed.
^ The vehicle may drop into default state (limp home) if the accelerator pedal is fully depressed (maximum demand) or in rest position (minimum demand), resulting in a reduction in power.
^ The engine may start and then suddenly stall.
RESOLUTION:
INSPECT THROTTLE BODY AND IF INDICATED REPLACE
At the next service opportunity inspect the manufacturing date code on the throttle body housing. Determine if the throttle body has a date code prior to 02.14.5.II. If the throttle has a date code prior to 02.14.5.II, the throttle must be replaced. If the date code is 02.14.5.II or later, no repair action is required.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
INSPECT MANUFACTURING DATE CODE
1. Raise hood and support in the open position.
2. Use a light to illuminate and identify the throttle body identification numbers located on the throttle gear cover plate. (Figure 1)
NOTE:
The date sequence is year-week-day-shift. See the 01.40.4.II explanation below:
^ 01 - Identifies the last two digits of the year of manufacture.
^ 40 - Identifies the sequential week number of the year of manufacture.
^ 4 - Identifies the day in the week the part was manufactured.
^ II - Identifies the shift.
NOTE:
The RAVE WSM indicates that a seal replacement is required when installing a new throttle body. This information is incorrect for the KV-6 engine. The KV-6 intake system utilizes reusable seal technology.
3. If the manufacturing date code is before "02.14.5.II" refer to RAVE section 19.22.45 and replace the throttle body.
4. If the manufacturing date code is 02.14.5.II or later no repair action is required.
INSTALL CAMPAIGN LABEL
NOTE:
Campaign labels may have multiple Campaign numbers written on them if multiple campaigns are performed at the same time.
1. When all specified repairs have been accomplished, prepare the campaign label (LRN0002LABEL) as follows:
a) Place the label on a hard surface.
b) Use a ballpoint pen to neatly write/scribe in the bare aluminum areas of the label the following information:
^ Service Campaign code "B113"
^ Your retailer code
^ The date of repair
2. Clean all grease and dirt from the radiator support member.
3. Peel the completed campaign label from the backing paper and position it on the cleaned area.
4. Roll the label with the special roller tool to ensure proper adhesion.
