Steering - Rattle Noise From Hose on Tight Turns

Steering Hose Causes Rattle

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

Freelander (LN) All

SITUATION:

RATTLE FROM HOSE WHILE TURNING

A customer may complain of a rattle sound from the base of the steering column. The sound usually occurs while cornering at low to moderate speed when the inner wheel contacts an uneven road surface. The cause is the sudden increase in the power assisted steering (PAS) fluid pressure in the fluid return hose.

RESOLUTION:

INSTALL NEW SPECIFICATION

Where a complaint of the above is confirmed, follow the rectification procedure below to replace the PAS fluid return hose with a new specification hose.

Install new specification PAS return hose and bleed system

Normal warranty policy and procedures apply.
Material allowance is included in labor operation.

DDW WARRANTY CLAIMS:





DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

REPLACE PAS HOSE

NOTE:
Some PAS fluid loss will occur when the hose is disconnected.

1. Position container to catch fluid spillage.





2. Remove the bolt securing the fluid hose bracket to the PAS rack. (Arrowed Figure 1).





3. Reposition the bracket for access (A Figure 2).

4. Release fluid return hose union and disconnect the fluid return hose from the PAS rack (B Figure 2).





5. Remove bolt securing the fluid return hose P clip to the body (A Figure 3).

CAUTION:
It is important to avoid contamination of the steering rack with road grime or other contaminants while the replacing the hose.

6. Clean the areas around the hose fitting.

7. Using the hose disconnection tool LRT-57-044, disconnect the quick fit connection (B Figure 3).

8. Remove and discard the fluid return hose.

9. Carefully clean the fluid return hose union and PAS rack port.

10. Position the new fluid return hose and connect the quick release connection.

11. Connect the fluid return hose to the PAS rack.

12. Tighten the fluid return hose union to 22 Nm (16 lbf.ft.).

13. Position and fit the fluid hose bracket and tighten bolt to 8 Nm (6 lbf.ft.).

14. Position and fit the P clip.

15. Refer to RAVE section, 57.15.02 and top-up/bleed the PAS system.
