ABS ECU Availability for Repairs
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
Freelander (LN) ALL
SITUATION:
ABS ECU PREVIOUSLY UNAVAILABLE SEPARATELY
The Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) has been a non-serviceable item on Freelander. Consequently vehicles requiring a replacement ECU, required the whole ABS Modulator assembly (including the ECU) to be changed.
RESOLUTION:
ABS ECU NOW SERVICEABLE
Replacement ECUs are now available as a separate part. Following diagnosis, should it become necessary to replace the ABS ECU, follow the Service Procedure detailed in this bulletin to replace the ECU only.
PARTS INFORMATION:
DDW WARRANTY CLAIMS:
DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.
Normal warranty policy and procedures apply.
Material allowance is included in labor operation.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
INSTALL REPLACEMENT ABS ECU
NOTE:
GTR lookup sequence is as follows:
GTR Home > NAS > Service Information/ LN Freelander/2004 > Workshop Manuals > Service Procedures > Bookmark "BRAKES/REPAIRS" > "Modulator unit" link
1. Refer to GTR Workshop Manual section 70.65.49 and follow steps 1 to 5 of the ABS Modulator Unit removal.
2. Release the catch and disconnect ABS modulator connector. (Figure 1)
3. Remove the 3 screws securing the ECU to the Modulator using a 6 mm external torx socket. (Figure 2)
4. Carefully separate the ECU from the modulator. (Figure 3)
5. Pull the ECU towards the front of the vehicle until the ECU is clear of the modulator hydraulic unit.
CAUTION:
The replacement unit must be handled with care when removing it from packaging and when installing it to the ABS modulator. Misalignment of the ECU solenoids with the modulator hydraulic spigots may result in damage to the new ECU.
6. Line up the modulator electrical connector with its corresponding connector in the new ECU.
7. Carefully install the new ECU to the modulator hydraulic unit keeping the solenoids aligned correctly with the extensions on the hydraulic unit. (Figure 4)
8. Install the 3 external torx screws and tighten to a torque of 3 Nm (2.2 lbf.ft).
9. Refer to the GTR procedure 70.65.49 and follow steps 5, 6, 7, 8 and 12 of the ABS Modulator Unit installation procedure.
10. Connect a battery charger set on low amps to the vehicle battery.
CAUTION:
To ensure correct operation, the ABS system ECU MUST be programmed using T4 at installation.
NOTE:
The on-screen instructions indicate that the ABS module is to be replaced during the T4 diagnostic session. Because the ABS module does not contain LCS data or vehicle mileage, it's acceptable to start the diagnostic session with the new ABS module already fitted to the vehicle.
11. Connect 14 to the vehicle and perform the following:
^ Select "System Diagnosis".
^ Select "ABS".
^ Select "Vehicle Maintenance".
^ Select "ECU Renewal".
^ Follow on screen directions to program the new ABS module.
^ When the ABS module programming is completed, 14 will display a reminder to calibrate the "G" Sensor. You will be returned to the ABS - Vehicle Maintenance icon group.
^ Select "G" Sensor Calibration and follow the on-screen instructions to calibrate the sensor.
