Harman Becker Traffic Pro Diagnostic Aid

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
Freelander (LN) All with Harman Becker Traffic Pro navigation system
Discovery Series II (LT) All with Harman Becker Traffic Pro navigation system

CONDITION SUMMARY:

DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION FOR HARMAN BECKER TRAFFIC PRO NAVIGATION SYSTEM

Situation:
This bulletin has been released to provide diagnosis information for various operating issues with the Harman Becker Traffic Pro navigation system.

The Navigation unit part number is XQD000220PMA.

The Display panel part number is XQ1000010.

NOTE:
Before replacing any parts, a resetting of the Navigation unit MUST BE attempted. The unit is reset by pressing the TP button and buttons 1 and 3 at the same time.

Before a Display panel or complete Navigation unit replacement is accepted, a known "good" unit MUST BE substituted and the original unit retried to confirm the problem.

In all circumstances, replacing the Display panel MUST BE attempted before replacing the complete Navigation unit.

NOTE:
To enter/exit the Service Menu for checking Navigation inputs, such as speed, satellite and direction data, the number 1 and 10 buttons must be pressed at the same time.

Action:
Refer to the Diagnostic Procedures detailed in this bulletin to resolve the reported Navigation system operation concerns and reset the calibration.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

DIAGNOSE AND RESOLVE NAVIGATION SYSTEM OPERATION CONCERNS

Symptom 1 - Unit is inoperative or suffers intermittent operation

Diagnostic Procedure:

1. Is the correct pin code entered correctly?

^ If no, enter the correct code.

^ If yes, proceed to next step.

2. Can the unit be operated via the ON button?

^ If yes, check the integrity of the electrical connectors and vehicle wiring for any loose connections or intermittent wiring breaks.

^ If no, proceed to next step.

3. Is the removable display panel inserted correctly?

^ If no, remove and install the display panel correctly onto the unit.

^ If yes, proceed to next step.

4. Are the vehicle and the unit fuses all intact?

^ If no, replace fuses.

^ If yes, check the integrity of the electrical connectors and vehicle wiring for any loose connections or intermittent wiring breaks and continue to next step.

5. Are all the necessary battery power supplies and grounds present?

^ If no, ensure all the necessary battery power supplies and grounds are present and that the power voltage is between 10-14V.

^ If yes, continue to next step.

6. If none of the previous procedures resolved the concern, substitute the display panel for a known working panel and retest the unit.

7. Does replacing the panel correct the concern?

^ If yes, re-test the original display panel to confirm the problem returns. If the problem returns, replace the display panel.

^ If no, replace the complete unit.

Symptom 2 - Display is blank/inoperative or suffers intermittent or poor quality operation

Diagnostic Procedure:

1. Is the removable display panel inserted correctly?

^ If no, remove and re-install the display panel correctly onto the unit.

^ If yes, continue to next step.

2. Does the display work intermittently?

^ If yes, clean the display contacts and re-install the display panel.

^ If no, proceed to next step.

3. Are there thin black lines on the display?

^ If yes, change the display panel.

^ If no, proceed to next step.

4. If there are any black patches on the display, proceed as follows:

^ Allow the unit to cool down and recheck.

^ If patches remain, change the display panel only.

Symptom 3 - operation

Diagnostic Procedure:

1. Is the correct Nav disc installed in the unit?

^ If no, install the correct Nav disc.

^ If yes, continue to next step.

2. Does the unit display "GPS Antenna Error"?

^ If yes, check the GPS antenna, the antenna connections and wiring.

^ If no, proceed to next step.

3. Does the unit display "GPS Module Error" permanently?

^ If yes, substitute the complete unit for a known working unit and retest.

^ If replacing the panel corrects the concern, retest the original unit to confirm problem returns.

^ If the problem returns, replace the unit.

^ If no, proceed to next step.

4. With the vehicle parked outside and clear of any high obstructions, how many satellites are shown?

^ If less than three satellites are shown, proceed as follows:

^ Check the GPS antenna, particularly the ground connection to the vehicle body.

^ Check the test location for any high obstructions and retest.

^ If greater than three satellites are shown, proceed to next check.

5. Is the unit calibrated correctly?

^ If no, reset the unit calibration as follows and retest:

^ Ensure the correct Nav disc is inserted.

^ Press the Nav button twice.

^ Press buttons 3 and 5 at the same time.

^ Use the right hand knob to select Calibration and press the knob to confirm.

^ Use the knob again to select Delete Calibration and press knob to confirm.

^ Now that the calibration has been deleted, follow prompts to carry out a new calibration according to the service manual.

^ If yes, continue to next step.

6. Does the speed input operate correctly?

^ If no, check the wiring/speed input for any problems.

^ If yes, continue to next step.

7. Does the reverse input operate correctly?

^ If no, check the wiring/reverse input for any problems.

^ If still not working, reset the unit calibration as follows and retest:

^ Ensure the correct Nav disc is inserted.

^ Press the Nav button twice.

^ Press buttons 3 and 5 at the same time.

^ Use the right hand knob to select Calibration and press the knob to confirm.

^ Use the knob again to select Delete Calibration and press knob to confirm.

^ Now that the calibration has been deleted, follow prompts to carry out a new calibration according to the service manual.

^ If still not working, substitute the complete unit for a known working unit and retest.

^ If the concern is rectified, retest the original unit to confirm the problem returns.

^ If the problem returns, replace the unit.

^ If yes, continue to next step.

8. What is the precision value 'P'?

^ If greater than six, check the test location, system calibration and GPS Antenna.

^ If less than six, recheck the navigation operation.

Symptom 4 - Radio suffers poor performance or is inoperative

Diagnostic Procedure:

1. Are both the AM and FM radio bands working correctly?

^ If no, check that the antenna connections and wiring harness are all installed correctly.

^ If still not working, reset the unit calibration as follows and retest:

^ Ensure the correct Nav disc is inserted.

^ Press the Nav button twice.

^ Press buttons 3 and 5 at the same time.

^ Use the right hand knob to select Calibration and press the knob to confirm.

^ Use the knob again to select Delete Calibration and press knob to confirm.

^ Now that the calibration has been deleted, follow prompts to carry out a new calibration according to the service manual.

^ If still not working, substitute the complete unit for a known working unit and retest.

^ If the concern is rectified, re-test the original unit to confirm the problem returns.

^ If the problem returns, replace the unit.

^ If yes, continue to next step.

2. Is the FM tuner in RDS or DAS mode?

^ If in DAS mode, change to RDS mode and recheck radio.

^ If in RDS mode, proceed to next check.

Symptom 5 - CD changer suffers poor performance or is inoperative

Diagnostic Procedure:

1. Is the correct CD Changer installed?

^ If no, ensure the correct CD Changer is installed and recheck.

^ If yes, continue to next step.

2. Verify that the CD magazine been inserted correctly as follows:

^ Eject the CD magazine

^ Cycle the ignition

^ Reload magazine

^ Recheck operation

^ If this fails to rectify the problem proceed to next step.

3. Do the remote switches work (if installed)?

^ If no, check the wiring harness and electrical connectors and recheck.

^ If still not working, reset the unit calibration as follows and retest:

^ Ensure the correct Nav disc is inserted.

^ Press the Nav button twice.

^ Press buttons 3 and 5 at the same time.

^ Use the right hand knob to select Calibration and press the knob to confirm.

^ Use the knob again to select Delete Calibration and press knob to confirm.

^ Now that the calibration has been deleted, follow prompts to carry out a new calibration according to the service manual.

^ If still not working, substitute the complete unit for a known working unit and retest.

^ If the concern is rectified, retest the original unit to confirm the problem returns.

^ If the problem returns, replace the unit.

^ If yes, continue to next step.

4. Install a working CD Changer, to determine if the Traffic Pro unit works with another CD Changer.

^ If the known working CD changer resolves the problem, install the original CD changer to confirm the problem returns. If the problem returns, replace the CD Changer.

^ If changing the CD changer had no effect, replace the Traffic Pro unit.

Symptom 6 - Single CD in Traffic Pro unit is inoperative, stuck or will not load/eject

Diagnostic Procedure:

1. Is there a disc already in unit?

^ If yes, and the disc will not eject, reset the unit calibration as follows and retest:

^ Ensure the correct Nav disc is inserted.

^ Press the Nav button twice.

^ Press buttons 3 and 5 at the same time.

^ Use the right hand knob to select Calibration and press the knob to confirm.

^ Use the knob again to select Delete Calibration and press knob to confirm.

^ Now that the calibration has been deleted, follow prompts to carry out a new calibration according to the service manual.

NOTE:
If a CD appears to be jammed and will not eject after resetting the calibration, DO NOT attempt to retrieve the disc. The Traffic Pro unit is to be returned INTACT with the disc inside.

^ If resetting the calibration fails to release the disc, replace the unit and return the problem unit intact with the disc inside.

^ If no, proceed to next check.

2. Is the disc difficult to insert or it jams on insertion?

^ If yes, check for valid media type and try again. If this fails replace the unit.

^ If no, proceed to next step.

3. Is the unit having difficulty reading/playing the disc?

^ If yes, check for valid media type and try again, ensuring that the disc is correctly orientated. If this fails replace unit.

^ If no, proceed to next step.

4. Does the unit display "CD Temp"?

^ If yes, allow to cool and check again.

^ If no, replace the unit.
