Fog/Driving Lamp: Description and Operation

Fog Lamps - North America And Canada

DESCRIPTION

Introduction
The fog lights can be switched on and off using the lighting control switch, which is located on the instrument panel, adjacent the steering wheel. There are minor differences between vehicles fitted with front fog lamps and those without. These are as follows:

Rear Fog Lamps Only
The rear fog lamps will only illuminate if the ignition switch is turned to the 'ignition' position and the lighting control switch is turned to the side or headlamp position. Pulling the lighting control switch out to its first position will illuminate the rear fog lamps.

Front and Rear Fog Lamps
The front and rear fog lamps will only illuminate if the ignition switch is turned to the 'ignition' position and the lighting control switch is turned to the side or headlamp position. Pulling the lighting control switch out to its first position will illuminate the front fog lamps. Pulling the lighting control switch out to its second position will illuminate the front and rear fog lamps.

NOTE: If headlamp high beam is selected, the front fog lamps will extinguish.

Two indicators are located in the instrument cluster to inform the driver that the fog lamps are illuminated; one for the front fog lamps, one for the rear.

OPERATION

Power Distribution
Feed from the positive battery terminal (C0192) is supplied to the ignition relay and fusible link 11E (C0632) on an R wire. Both are located in the Battery Junction Box (BJB). Fusible link 11E (C0570) is connected to the ignition switch (C0028) by an N wire. When the ignition switch is in the 'ignition' position, current flows across the switch (C0028) to fuse 28P of the Central Junction Box (CJB) (C0582) on a Y wire. Fuse 28P (C0583) provides an ignition feed to the ignition relay coil (C0570) on an LG wire. The relay coil (C0570) is provided a ground path on a B wire.

The energised ignition relay provides a battery feed to fusible link 2E, which is also located in the BJB. Fusible link 2E (C0570) provides a feed to the lighting control switch (C0041) on an NP wire.

Lighting Control Switch

NOTE: The corresponding circuit diagram shows a vehicle fitted with front and rear fog lamps. Circuit functionality is the same as that for vehicles fitted with rear fog lamps only. The only change is to the internal circuitry within the lighting control switch.

Front Fog Lamps
When front fog lamps are selected, current flows across the lighting control switch (C0041) to the front fog lamp relay (C0570) on a UR wire. The front fog lamp relay is located in the BJB and provides a feed to fuse 38P of the CJB (C0582) on a UR wire.

Fuse 38P (C0583) provides a feed to the LH (C0514) and RH (C0513) front fog lamps on a pair of UP wires. Both lamps are provided a ground path on B wires. Fuse 38P (C0583) also provides a feed to the front fog lamp indicator (C0230) on a UP wire. The front fog lamp indicator is located in the instrument cluster (C0230) and is provided a ground path on a B wire.

Front Fog Lamp Relay
If headlamp high beam is selected, the front fog lamps will extinguish. This feature is controlled by the front fog lamp relay. When high beam is selected, the main beam FET (C0583) provides a feed to the front fog lamp relay coil (C0570) on a US wire. The relay coil (C0570) is provided a ground on a B wire. The energised front fog lamp relay removes the feed to fuse 38P (C0582), extinguishing the front fog lamps and indicator. When main beam is de-selected, the FET removes the feed to the front fog lamp relay coil, which in turn illuminates the front fog lamps and indicators.

Rear Fog Lamps
When rear fog lamps are selected, current flows across the lighting control switch (C0041) to fuse 44P of the CJB (C0582) on an RO wire. Fuse 44P (C0585) provides a feed to the LH (C0121) and RH (C0125) rear fog lamps on a pair of RY wire. Both lamps are provided a ground path on B wires.

Fuse 44P (C0585) also provides a feed to the rear fog lamp indicator (C0230) on a RY wire. The rear fog lamp indicator is located in the instrument cluster (C0230) and is provided a ground path on a B wire.
