Removal
Transmission - 3.2LSpecial Service Tools
1. Remove the cover and disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. WARNING: Make sure to support the vehicle with axle stands.
Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Remove the starter motor.
4. Drain the transmission fluid.
5. Drain the coolant.
6. Remove the accessory drive pulley.
7. Remove the front subframe assembly.
8. Remove the crankshaft front oil seal.
9. Release the LH and RH halfshafts.
Special Service Tools: Remover, Halfshaft
10. Remove the LH halfshaft.
11. Remove the RH halfshaft.
12. Tie the suspension arms aside for access.
13. Remove the power transfer unit support bracket.
14. NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.
Remove the power transfer unit assembly.
15. If the locking pin on the special tool is disengaged, the crankshaft can be rotated.
Special Service Tools: Locking Tool, Crankshaft
16. Remove the access cover.
17. Release the flexplate.
18. Remove the coolant pump inlet pipe.
19. Release and disconnect the selector lever cable.
20. Release the power steering pump mounting bracket.
21. Release the power steering pump and tie aside
22. Disconnect the 2 transmission fluid cooler coolant hoses.
23. Release the automatic transmission fluid cooler.
24. Support the engine.
Special Service Tools: Support Beam, Engine
Special Service Tools: Support Beam Arm and Hook Assembly, Engine
25. Support the transmission.
General Equipment: Powertrain Jack
26. WARNING: Make sure that new nuts are installed.
NOTE: Vehicles with automatic transmission have a breather pipe attached to the mounting.
Remove the bracket.
27. Remove the LH engine mount.
28. Remove the engine mount bracket.
29. Remove the 9 transmission bolts.
30. CAUTION: Make sure that the torque converter remains in the transmission.
NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.
Remove the transmission and converter.
31. CAUTION: Make sure that the dowels are located on the engine and not the transmission.
Install the torque converter retainer.
32. CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping fluids.
NOTE: Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.
Remove the transmission fluid cooler.
