SECTION: 413
Instrument Cluster Causing Battery Drain
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
CONDITION SUMMARY:
Situation:
An issue has been identified where the vehicle battery may be drained without apparent reason. This may be due to the instrument cluster causing a 1.2 Amp drain on the battery and not allowing the vehicle to go into 'sleep mode'.
Action:
In the event of a customer concern of the above, refer to the Repair Procedure outlined below to measure the battery drain and, if necessary, reconfigure the instrument cluster control module.
PARTS:
No parts necessary
TOOLS:
* IDS with latest DVD and Calibration Files; first available on IDS-DVD117 Patch File 11*
Land Rover-approved Midtronics Vehicle Power Supply
WARRANTY:
NOTE:
Repair procedures are under constant review, and therefore times are subject to change; those quoted here must be taken as guidance only. Always refer to DDW to obtain the latest repair time.
DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.
Normal warranty policy and procedures apply.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
DISCHARGE TEST FOR INSTRUMENT CLUSTER
1. Refer to Battery Care Manual section Quiescent Current Testing and connect suitable current measuring equipment to the vehicle and select 'Amps' from the range.
2. Set ignition to position 'II'.
3. Set ignition to 'OFF'.
4. Remove ignition key.
5. Ensure hood latch is 'closed'.
6. Lock vehicle to arm the alarm system.
7. Allow a minimum of six (6) minutes to pass and record the discharge reading:
^ If the discharge reading is 1.2A or above, continue to 'RECONFIGURE THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER CONTROL MODULE'.
^ If the discharge reading is less than 1.2A but greater than 50.0mA, reconfiguration of the Instrument Cluster Control Module is not necessary. Continue with Quiescent Current Testing as described in the Battery Care Manual to determine cause of discharge.
UPDATE THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE
CAUTION:
Ensure all ignition 'ON' / ignition 'OFF' requests are carried out; failure to perform these steps may cause damage to control modules in the vehicle.
CAUTION:
A Land Rover-approved Midtronics Vehicle Power Supply must be connected to the vehicle battery during IDS diagnosis / module programming.
1. Connect the Land Rover-approved Midtronics Vehicle Power Supply to the vehicle battery.
* NOTE:
IDS must be loaded with IDS-DVD121_V6.01 or later and Calibration File 31 or later.
2. Connect the IDS to the vehicle and begin a new Symptom Driven Diagnostics (SDD) session.
3. Follow the on-screen prompts allowing SDD to read the VIN and identify the vehicle.
4. From the Session Type selection screen, choose 'Diagnosis'.
5. Select the Selected Symptoms tab, and then select:
^ Electrical > Battery > Current drain high
6. Select 'continue'.
7. Select the Recommendations tab.
8. From the Recommendations tab, select Run to configure the Instrument cluster control module Follow all on-screen instructions to complete this task.*
9. Disconnect the Midtronics Vehicle Power Supply from the vehicle.
10. Perform DISCHARGE TEST FOR INSTRUMENT CLUSTER to confirm battery draw is 50mA or below.
11. Exit the current session.
12. Disconnect the IDS from the vehicle.
