Steering Column Tilt Malfunction - Repair Procedure
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE
CONDITION SUMMARY:
NOTE:
For customer concerns of steering column reach or exterior door mirror functionality, refer to GTR and IDS for further diagnosis; to be carried out as a separate Warranty claim.
Situation:
Certain vehicles may experience one or more of the following faults:
^ Steering column does not return to the last stored tilt position when ignition is switched 'on'
^ Steering column tilt motor continues to operate after reaching maximum travel when ignition is switched 'ON' for after steering column tilt lever is operated
^ Steering column moves to the opposite of position requested when steering column tilt lever is operated
These faults may be caused by corruption of the Memory Seat Module software or steering column tilt motor wear.
Action:
In the event of a customer concern of any of the above, refer to the Repair Procedure outlined below.
PARTS
TOOLS:
IDS with latest IDS DVD release; software first available on IDS DVD117 Patch File 4 Midtronic PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply
WARRANTY:
NOTE:
Repair procedures are under constant review, and therefore times are subject to change; those quoted here must be taken as guidance only. Always refer to DDW to obtain the latest repair time.
DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
VERIFY LEFT AND RIGHT-HAND GROUND HEADER TORQUE
1. Open all four doors.
CAUTION:
Use care to release all trim panel clips.
2. Remove left-hand (LH) front kick trim panel. (Figure 1)
3. Remove LH rear kick trim panel. (Figure 2)
4. Move left-front seat to the forward-most position.
5. Remove LH B-pillar trim. (Figure 3)
6. Move carpet aside to access ground block.
7. Verify ground block nut torque (9 Nm [6.6 lbf ft]). (Figure 4)
8. Install carpet.
9. Install LH B-pillar trim.
10. Install LH rear kick trim panel.
11. Install LH front kick trim panel.
12. Repeat steps 2 - 11 on right-hand (RH) side of vehicle.
REPLACE DRIVER'S SEAT MEMORY SWITCH PACK
*NOTE:
12-way position seats in 2006MY vehicles now included.*
NOTE:
Global Technical Reference (GTR) lookup sequence is as follows: GTR Home > NAS > LM - New Range Rover > Service Information > Model Year > Workshop Manuals > 5: Body and Paint > 501: Body and Paint > 501-10: Seating
1. Refer to Workshop Manual (GTR) Section 501-10: Seating and replace the driver's seat memory switch pack.
INSPECT STEERING COLUMN TILT MOTOR
NOTE:
If at any time while performing steps 1-3 the tilt motor can be heard turning but the steering column is not moving, the tilt motor will need to be replaced. If the tilt motor needs to be replaced, continue to REPLACE STEERING COLUMN TILT MOTOR.
1. Using the Manual Steering Column Control Switch, adjust the steering column tilt towards its 'fully up' position until the column stops moving.
2. Apply the Control Switch again in an upwards direction. If the column has not reached it's 'fully up' mechanical hard stop position, it will move upwards a small increment on each subsequent application of the Control Switch.
3. Repeat upwards applications of the Control Switch until the column no longer moves. It has now reached the mechanical 'Hard Stop' position. If the tilt motor needs to be replaced, carry on from step 6.
4. During adjustment, observe the movement of the Steering Column. If the travel movement is intermittent, i.e. the Steering Column stops briefly and then continues to move while the Control Switch is constantly applied, the Tilt Motor will need to be replaced. Continue to CONFIGURE SEAT MEMORY CONTROL MODULE below.
5. Once this process is completed and assuming no failure of the tilt motor is evident, use the Control Switch to cycle the Steering Column tilt to it's 'fully down' position and then it's 'fully up' position.
6. Only if necessary, replace steering column tilt motor:
NOTE:
Global Technical Reference (GTR) lookup sequence is as follows: GTR Home > NAS > LM - New Range Rover > Service Information > Model Year > Workshop Manuals > 2: Chassis > 211: Steering System > 211-04: Steering Column
^ Refer to Workshop Manual (GTR) Section 211-04: Steering Column and replace the steering column tilt motor.
CONFIGURE SEAT MEMORY CONTROL MODULE
*CAUTION:
Ensure all ignition 'ON' / ignition 'OFF' requests are carried out; failure to perform these steps may cause damage to control modules in the vehicle.*
CAUTION:
A Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply must be connected to the vehicle battery during IDS diagnosis / module programming.
*NOTE:
When performing module software updates, if IDS displays 'no update required' , select 'tick', then select 'X' in the pop-up window to abort the routine.
1. Connect the Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply to the vehicle battery.
NOTE:
IDS must be loaded with software release DVD117 Patch File 4 or later.
2. Connect the IDS to the vehicle and begin a new diagnostic session by entering the correct VIN for the current vehicle.
3. Follow the IDS prompts to read the vehicle configuration.
4. Select 'No' when prompted 'Do you wish to read diagnostic trouble codes?'
5. Select 'tick' to continue.
6. Verify Steering Column Easy Ingress / Egress function is 'enabled'.
7. Select the 'Vehicle Configuration' tab when Content Model is displayed.
8. From the Vehicle Configuration menu, configure the 'Seat memory control module' by selecting from the dropdown menu:
^ 'Module programming' > 'Configure new module' > 'Seat memory control module renewal'
9. * Follow all on-screen instructions until IDS displays the current and proposed software levels.
^ If 'Software update required' is displayed, select 'tick' to configure the Seat memory control module, following all on-screen instructions to complete this task.
^ If 'No update required' is displayed select 'tick', then select 'X' in the pop-up window to abort the routine; exit the current session.*
10. When completed, IDS will return to the Vehicle Configuration menu.
11. Exit the current session.
12. Disconnect IDS and the Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply from the vehicle.
13. Verify steering column functionality.
