Timing Chain: Service and Repair

NOTE: On models with coded audio anti-theft systems, refer to Technician Safety Information for code procedures. On models with air bag system, disarm airbag system as outlined under Technician Safety Information.

REMOVAL

1. Drain engine oil and coolant.
2. Remove engine under cover and radiator.
3. Disconnect A/C compressor and bracket.
4. Disconnect radiator hose from water inlet, then remove radiator pipe.
5. Remove water pump retaining bolts and water pump.
6. Remove cylinder head as outlined under Cylinder Head Assembly.
7. Disconnect oil cooler pipe bracket from No. 1 oil pan.
8. Remove oil level sensor.
9. Remove No. 1 oil pan attaching bolts, then remove oil pan.
10. Remove crankshaft pulley and drive belt idler pulley.
11. Remove timing chain cover attaching bolts and drive belt adjusting bar.
12. Remove timing chain cover with oil pump.
13. Remove timing chain and camshaft timing gear.
14. Remove crankshaft timing gear.
15. Remove chain tensioner slipper and vibration damper.

16. Remove oil jet and oil pump drive shaft gear. Position shop towels as shown in Fig. 10, to prevent damage.


INSTALLATION

1. Rotate crankshaft until set key faces downward.
2. Install pump drive shaft gear.
3. Install oil pump drive shaft gear and oil jet.
4. Install chain tensioner slipper and vibration damper.
5. Install crankshaft timing gear.
6. Install timing chain on camshaft timing gear. Align bright colored link on timing chain with timing mark on camshaft timing gear.

7. Install timing chain on crankshaft timing gear. Align bright colored link on timing chain with timing mark on crankshaft timing gear, Fig. 11.
8. Apply seal packing to timing chain cover, then install timing chain cover with oil pump.
9. Install drive belt idler pulley and torque bolt to specification.
10. Install crankshaft pulley and torque bolt to specification.
11. Install No. 1 and No. 2 oil pans and torque bolts to specifications.
12. Install oil level sensor.
13. Connect oil cooler pipe bracket to No. 1 oil pan.
14. Install cylinder head as outlined under Cylinder Head Assembly.
15. Install water pump and radiator pipe.
16. Install A/C compressor and bracket.
17. Install radiator. Fill engine with oil and check for leaks.
18. Install engine under cover.
19. On models with air bag system, rearm airbag system as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
20. If audio system was disabled, activate as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
