Ignition Timing: Testing and Inspection

1. Warm up engine.
Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.





2. Connect TOYOTA hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool or equivalent.
(a) Remove the fuse cover on the instrument panel.
(b) Connect the TOYOTA hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool or equivalent to the Data Link Connector (DLC)3.
(c) Please refer to the TOYOTA hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool or equivalent operator's manual for further details.
3. Connect timing light to engine.
4. Check idle speed.
(a) Race the engine speed at 2,500 rpm for approximately 90 seconds.
(b) Check the idle speed.
Idle speed: 650 +/- 50 rpm
5. Inspect and adjust ignition timing.





(a) Using Special Service Tool (SST) Diagnosis Check Wire # 09843 - 18020 or equivalent, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the DLC1.





(b) Using a timing light, check the ignition timing.
Ignition timing: 3° Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) @ idle.
(Transmission in neutral position and A/C off).
(c) Loosen the hold-down bolt, and adjust by turning the distributor.
(d) Tighten the hold-down bolt, and recheck the ignition timing.
Torque: 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)
(e) Remove the SST from the DLC1.





6. Further check ignition timing.
Check that the ignition timing advances.
Ignition timing: 2° - 13° BTDC @ idle.

NOTE: The timing mark moves in a range between 2° and 13°.

7. Disconnect timing light from engine.
8. Disconnect TOYOTA hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool or equivalent.
