A. Column Tube Clean/Telescope Motor, Cable, Column Upper Tube

COLUMN TUBE CLEANING/TELESCOPIC MOTOR, CABLE, COLUMN UPPER TUBE Procedure A REPLACEMENT (REFER TO VIN RANGE CHART).

1. Set Front Wheels and Steering Wheel to Straight-Ahead Position.

2. Record Memory.

A. With the ignition key in the "ON" position, record the customers radio presets and press the seat memory switch "1."

B. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.

C. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

NOTE:
If the Tilt/Telescopic ECU is in need of replacement based on VIN range and there is no previous repair history, this is a good point to address procedure E.

3. Remove Steering Wheel Pad.

NOTE:
^ If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, DTCs will be recorded.

^ Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new ones.

CAUTION:
Disconnect the battery at least 90 seconds before working on SRS.

A. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.

B. Remove the steering wheel lower No. 2 and No. 3 covers.





C. Using a torx socket wrench, loosen the 2 torx screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.





D. Pull the pad out from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.

E. Disconnect the horn connector.





NOTE:
When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull or damage the airbag wire harness.

NOTE:
^ When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.

^ Never disassemble the wheel pad.

4. Remove Steering Wheel

A. Disconnect the spiral cable connector.

B. Remove the steering wheel set nut.

C. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly.





D. Using SST, remove the steering wheel. SST 09950-50012 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05020)

5. Remove Cluster Finish Panel Remove the connector.

6. Remove Upper and Lower Column Covers - Remove the 3 screws.

7. Remove Combination Switch With Spiral Cable

A. Disconnect the 5 connectors.

B. Disconnect the airbag connector.

C. Remove the 3 screws.

8. Remove Spiral Cable

NOTE:
^ Do not disassemble, rotate, or apply oil to the cable.

^ Refer to components schematic.

9. Remove Lower No. 1 Panel

A. Remove the 2 screws and disconnect the hood lock release lever from the panel.

B. Remove the 2 screws and disconnect the fuel lid release lever from the panel.

C. Remove pad set screw.

D. Release clip in lower right corner of panel.

NOTE:
Use caution when releasing clip not to damage panel.

E. Disconnect connector for room temperature sensor.

F. Disconnect room temperature sensor hose.

G. Disconnect white and grey wire connectors.

10. Remove LH Lower Panel Remove the 4 bolts.

11. Remove the No. 2 Heater to Register Duct Remove the screw.

12. Remove Steering Column Assembly

A. Disconnect the 5 connectors leading to the ignition switch and the other 2 connectors to gain more access to the steering column assembly.

B. Remove the clips in 3 locations where the wire harness attaches to the steering column assembly.

C. Place matchmarks on the lower main shaft assembly and the lower column U-joint.

D. Remove the pinch bolt from the lower column U-joint.

E. Remove the 4 column assembly set nuts.

F. Remove steering column assembly from vehicle.





HINT:
Place Index Marks on the Lower Main Shaft Assembly and the Lower Column U-joint as illustrated.

NOTE:
Do not clamp Steering Column Assembly in a vice; damage may occur.

13. Remove Telescopic Steering Assembly

A. Remove the bolt and the steering column protector.





B. Remove the 2 bolts and telescopic steering slider support.

C. Disconnect the telescopic steering slider and screw.





D. Remove the 2 telescopic lever lock bolts and 2 telescopic steering wedge lock springs.

E. Tap on the 2 wedge locks from the backside to release pressure on the upper column tube.

NOTE:
Do not remove the wedge locks from the column tube.





F. Remove the column tube stopper bolt.

14. Remove Column Upper Tube Sub-Assembly With Main Shaft Assembly





A. Using a screwdriver, remove the snap ring.

B. Place ignition key in ignition lock cylinder and push inward white turning to the ACC position to release steering column lock.

C. Remove the column upper tube sub-assembly with main shaft from the column tube assembly.

NOTE:
Do not force the lower section of the main shaft in or out.

15. Remove Column Tube Assembly





A. Remove the upper and lower telescopic steering guides.

NOTE:
Pay close attention to the orientation of the guides during removal.

B. Discard the upper and lower telescopic steering guides.

NOTE:
Do not use any type of solvent to clean steering column component.





C. Remove the screw and disconnect the tilt steering support bond cable.





D. Remove the bolt and disconnect the connector bracket.

NOTE:
Do not force the lower section of the main shaft in or out.

16. Remove Column Upper Tube Assembly





A. Using a socket (19 mm), washer, nut and bolt (6 mm normal diameter, 1.0 mm pitch), remove the tilt adjusting nut No. 1 and bushing.

Reference (Bolt) 91131-40660

B. Employ the same manner described above to the other side.





C. Using a hexagon wrench, remove the 2 tilt steering bolts for the upper column tube.

D. Remove column upper tube assembly and support stopper bolt bushings (discard).

17. Install Column Upper Tube Assembly





A. Install the 4 new support stopper bolt bushings (2 tilt steering, and 2 tilt adjusting).

B. Install the new column upper tube assembly.

C. Install the 2 tilt steering bolts.

Torque: 20 N.m (210 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf)

D. Using a brass bar and a hammer, drive in the tilt adjusting nut No. 1.

E. Employ the same manner described to the other side.

NOTE:
If the tilt motor is in need of replacement based on VIN range and there is no previous repair history, this is a good point to address procedure D.

18. Install Column Tube Assembly





A.Connect the connector bracket with the bolt.





B. Connect the tilt steering support bond cable with the screw.

C. Apply a thin coat of molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease to the new upper and lower telescopic steering guides.





D. Install the upper and lower telescopic steering guides.

NOTE:
Pay close attention to the orientation of the guides during assembly.

E. Verify the ignition is in the ACC position and install the column tube assembly.

19. Install Column Upper tube Sub-Assembly With Main Shaft

A. Push in and turn the ignition key to the ACC position and carefully insert the column upper tube assembly with main shaft into the column tube assembly.

NOTE:
Do not force in the lower side of the main shaft.





B. Install the new snap ring.





C. Install the column tube stopper bolt.

Torque: 19 N.m (190 kgf.cm, 14 ft.lbf)





D. Install the 2 telescopic steering wedge lock springs and 2 telescopic lever lock bolts.

Torque: 10 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 8 ft.lbf)

NOTE:
Before tightening the telescopic lever lock bolts, manually check the column operation by sliding the column upper tube in and out of the column tube 2 to 4 times. If operation is not smooth, repeat steps 14(d) through 16(a).





E. Connect the telescopic steering slider and screw.

F. Install the telescopic steering slider support with 2 bolts with thread locking compound LockTite(R) 242 or equivalent.

Torque: 11 N.m (110 kgf.cm, 8 ft.lbf)

G. Install the steering column protector No. 1 with bolt.

Torque: 15 N.m (150 kgf.cm, 11 ft.lbf)

NOTE:
If the telescopic motor or telescopic motor and cable is in need of replacement based on VIN range, and there is no previous repair history, this is a good point to address procedures B or C.

20. Install Steering Column Assembly

A. Line up matchmarks on the lower main shaft assembly and the lower column U-joint.

B. Torque the pinch bolt on the lower column upper joint.

Torque: 34 N.m (350 kgf.cm, 25 ft.lbf)

C. Install steering column into vehicle.

D. Torque the 4 column assembly set nuts.

Torque: 25 N.m (260 kgf.cm, 19 ft.lbf)

E. Reconnect wire harness, 3 clips and 7 connectors.

21. Install No. 2 Heater to Register Duct

Tighten the screw.

22. Install LH Lower Panel

Tighten the 4 bolts.

23. Install Combination Switch with Spiral Cable

A. Tighten the 3 screws.

B. Connect the airbag connector.

C. Connect the 5 connectors.

24. Center Spiral Cable

A. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.

B. Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn the cable.





C. Then rotate cable clockwise about 2.5 turns to align the mark.

NOTE:
The cable will rotate about 2.5 turns to either left or right of the center.

25. Install Upper and Lower Column Covers

Tighten the 3 screws.

26. Install Lower No. 1 Panel

A. Pull door trim weatherstrip loose near the No. 1 panel to allow for panel installation.

B. Reconnect room temperature sensor connector and hose.

C. Reconnect white and grey connectors.

D. Tighten the pad set screw.

E. Connect the hood lock release lever and fuel lid release lever with the 4 screws.

F. Place door trim weatherstrip back into position once panel is connected and installed.

27. Install Cluster Finish panel Install the connector.

28. Install Steering Wheel

A. Align the matchmarks on the wheel and main shaft assembly.

B. Torque the wheel set nut.

Torque: 50 N.m (510 kgf.cm, 37 ft.lbf)

C. Connect spiral cable connector.

29. Install Steering Wheel Pad.

NOTE:
^ Make sure the wheel pad is installed to the specific torque.

^ If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the wheel and pad with a new one.

^ When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wiring does not interfere with other parts and are not pinched between other parts.

A. Connect ground connector.

B. Connect the airbag connector.





C. Install the pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the torx screw is caught on the screw's case.

D. Using a torx socket wrench torque the 2 screws.

Torque: 8.8 N.m (90 kgf.cm, 78 in.lbf)

E. Install the steering wheel lower No. 2 and No. 3 covers.

30. Check Steering Wheel Center Point.

31. Test Steering Column Operation by Cycling Steering Column Through Complete Range of Motion.

32. Reset Seat Position Memory.

33. Test Drive Vehicle and Cycle Steering Wheel Lock to Lock to Verify Smoothness.

34. Reprogram Radio with Customer's Presets and Reset Clock.
