B. Column Tube Cleaning
1. Set front wheels and steering wheel to the straight-ahead position.
2. With the ignition key in the "ON" position, record the Customer's Radio Presets and press the Seat Memory Switch "1".
3. Disconnect negative battery terminal.
4. Follow Steps 1-11 on pages SR-12 and SR-13 in the Repair Manual (RM620U2 or RM662U2) for Steering Column removal.
5. Remove the 4 Column Assembly Set Nuts and the Pinch Bolt from the Lower Column U-joint. Carefully remove Steering Column from the vehicle.
NOTE:
Do not clamp Steering Column assembly in a vise - damage may occur.
6. Remove the 2 bolts securing the Telescopic Motor to the Column Tube. Remove the Telescopic Motor and Telescopic Cable.
7. Remove the 2 bolts which attach the Telescopic Steering Slider Support to the Upper Column Tube.
Telescopic Lever Lock Bolts:
Wedge Locks:
8. Remove the 2 Telescopic Lever Lock Bolts and the 2 Compression Springs from the Steering Column Upper Clamp. Tap on the 2 Wedge Locks from the backside to release pressure on the Upper Column Tube.
IMPORTANT:
Do not remove the Wedge Locks from the Column Tube.
9. Remove the Telescopic Steering Stopper No.1 (bolt) as illustrated.
10. Place ignition key in Ignition Lock Cylinder and push inward while turning to the "ON" position to release Steering Column Lock. Using a screwdriver, remove the snap ring. Remove the column upper tube assembly with the main shaft from the Column Tube.
NOTE:
Do not force in or out the lower side shaft of the main shaft.
11. Carefully remove Upper and Lower Telescopic Steering Guides.
IMPORTANT:
Pay close attention to the orientation of the Guides during removal.
12. Wipe grease from Column Upper Tube, Column Tube and Telescopic Steering Guides.
NOTE:
Do not use any type of solvent to clean Steering Column Components.
13. Apply a thin coat of Molybdenum disulfide lithium grease to Column Upper Tube, Column Tube and Telescopic Steering Guides.
14. Carefully reinstall the Upper and Lower Telescopic Steering Guides. Make sure the Guides are installed in the same orientation as originally installed.
15. Push in and turn the ignition key to the "Start" position and carefully insert the Column Upper Tube into the Column Tube.
NOTE:
Do not force in the lower side of the main shaft.
16. Reinstall the Telescopic Steering Stopper No.1 (bolt).
17. Install a new Snap Ring.
18. Reinstall 2 Compression Springs and 2 Telescopic Lever Lock Bolts into the Steering Column Upper Clamp. Visually inspect the Lower Telescopic Steering Guides through the slots in the Column Tube to ensure they are positioned correctly. Torque Telescopic Lever Lock Bolts to 10 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 7 ft.lbf).
IMPORTANT:
Before tightening the telescopic lever lock bolt, check the column operation by sliding the column upper tube in and out of column tube 2 to 4 times. If operation is not smooth, repeat steps 8 through 17.
19. Carefully remove and replace the Telescopic Shaft Set Nut and torque to 0.8 N.m (8.2 kgf.cm, 7.in.lbf).
20. Stake the Telescopic Shaft Set Nut.
21. Apply Molybdenum disulfide lithium grease to the Telescopic Shaft threaded surface.
22. Install the Telescopic Steering Slider Support to the Upper Column Tube and torque 2 new bolts (or the 2 original bolts with Locktite(R) 242 applied) to 11 N.m (112 kgf.cm, 8 ft.lbf).
23. Install the new Telescopic Cable and Telescopic Motor. Torque the 2 Telescopic Motor Bolts to 9 N.m (90 kgf.cm, 78 in.lbf).
NOTE:
Apply a small amount of Molybdenum disulfide lithium based grease to both ends of the Telescopic Cable prior to installation.
NOTE:
If Telescopic Motor will be replaced. follow the instructions in Section D of this bulletin prior to reinstalling Steering Column into vehicle.
24. Install Steering Column into vehicle.
25. Torque 4 Column Assembly Set Nuts to 24.5 N.m (250 kgf.cm, 18 ft.lbf).
26. Torque the Pinch Bolt on the Lower Column U-joint to 34 N.m (350 kgf.cm, 25 ft.lbf).
27. Temporarily reconnect negative battery terminal.
28. Reconnect the Electrical Connectors and test operation of Steering Column Telescopic function.
29. Disconnect negative battery terminal.
30. Follow Steps 8-20 on pages SR22-23 of the Repair Manual (RM620U2 or RM662U2) for vehicle reassembly.
31. Test Steering Column operation by cycling the Steering Column through the complete ranges of motion.
32. Test drive vehicle and cyc1e of Steering Wheel lock to lock to verify smoothness of operation.
33. Reprogram Radio with Customer's presets and reset clock.
