Valve Clearance: Adjustments

VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT

1. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT
2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

NOTICE: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag activation.

3. REMOVE V-BANK COVER
4. REMOVE AIR CLEANER HOSE ASSEMBLY
5. REMOVE DRIVE BELT
6. REMOVE OIL COOLER PIPE
7. REMOVE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY
8. REMOVE NO. 3 TIMING BELT COVER SUBASSEMBLY RH
9. REMOVE NO. 3 TIMING BELT COVER SUBASSEMBLY LH
10. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY RH
11. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
12. SET NO. 1 CYLINDER TO TDC/COMPRESSION

a. Turn the crankshaft damper, and align its groove with timing mark 0 of the No. 1 timing belt cover.

b. Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing pulleys and timing belt rear plates are aligned. If not, turn the crankshaft 1 complete revolution (360°) and align the marks as above.
13. INSPECT VALVE CLEARANCE

a. Check only the valves indicated.
1 Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the valve lifter and camshaft.

Standard Valve Clearance (Cold):

2 Record valve clearance measurements that are out of the specified range. These measurements will be used later to determine the size of the adjustment shim to be installed.

b. Turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°) and align the marks.
c. Check only the valves indicated in the illustration. Measure the valve clearance.

Standard Valve Clearance (Cold):

14. REMOVE TIMING BELT
a. Remove the timing belt.
15. REMOVE CAMSHAFT (for Bank 2)
16. REMOVE CAMSHAFT (for Bank 1)
17. ADJUST VALVE CLEARANCE
a. Using a powerful magnet, remove the valve lifter and adjusting shim.

NOTICE:
^ Since the shims might drop inside the cylinder head, the operation should be performed slowly.
^ Shims should be classified by the installation.

b. Determine the replacement adjusting shim size according to these formulas and charts.
1 Using a micrometer, measure the thickness of the removed shim.
2 Calculate the thickness of a new shim so that the valve clearance is within the specified value.
T = Thickness of removed shim
A = Measured valve clearance
N = Thickness of new shim

Standard Valve Clearance:

c. Select a new shim with a thickness as close as possible to the calculated value.

HINT: Shims are available in 41 increments of 0.020 mm (0.0008 inch), from 2.00 mm (0.0787 inch) to 2.80 mm (0.1102).

d. Place a new adjusting shim on the valve.
e. Set the valve lifter in place.
f. Recheck the valve clearance.
Standard intake valve clearance (Cold): 0.15 to 0.25 mm (0.006 to 0.010 inch)
EXAMPLE: A 2.300 mm (0.0906 inch) shim is installed, and the measured clearance is 0.440 mm (0.0173 inch). Replace the 2.300 mm (0.0906 inch) shim with a No. 54 shim.

New Shim Thickness:

New Shim Thickness:

Standard exhaust valve clearance (Cold): 0.25 to 0.35 mm (0.010 to 0.014 inch)
EXAMPLE: A 2.300 mm (0.0906 inch) shim is installed, and the measured clearance is 0.440 mm (0.0173 inch). Replace the 2.300 mm (0.0906 inch) shim with a No. 44 shim.
