Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair
PARK / NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCHComponents:
ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Apply the parking brake and turn the ignition switch ON.
b. Depress the brake pedal and check that the engine starts when the shift lever is on N or P, but does not start in other positions.
c. Check that the back-up light illuminates and the reverse warning buzzer sounds when the shift lever is on R, but does not function in other positions.
REMOVAL
1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
2. DISCONNECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH CONNECTOR
3. REMOVE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Using a screwdriver, pry out the lock washer.
b. Remove the lock nut and lock washer.
c. Remove the bolt and park/neutral position switch.
INSPECTION
1. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH
a. Disconnect the PNP switch connector.
b. Measure the resistance of the PNP switch when the shift lever is moved to each position.
Standard Resistance:
ADJUSTMENT
1. ADJUST PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Loosen the park/neutral position switch bolt and move the shift lever to N.
b. Align the switch groove with the neutral basic line.
c. Hold the switch in position and tighten the bolt.
Torque: 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)
d. After adjustment, perform the inspection.
INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Install the park/neutral position switch to the manual valve shaft.
b. Temporarily install the bolt.
c. Install a new lock washer and the nut.
Torque: 7.0 Nm (71 kgf-cm, 62 inch lbs.)
d. Turn the control shaft fully rearward, and return the control shaft lever 2 notches to the N position.
e. Align the neutral basic line with the switch groove, and tighten the bolt.
Torque: 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)
f. Using a screwdriver, bend the tabs of the lock washer.
2. CONNECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH CONNECTOR
3. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
4. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
NOTICE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
5. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION
6. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION
7. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
