Power Tilt and Power Telescopic

STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY (for Power Tilt and Power Telescopic)

REMOVAL
1. PRECAUTION
2. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
3. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

NOTICE:
^ Start the overhaul of the steering column assembly at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the negative cable from the battery.
^ Be sure to disconnect the negative cable of the battery properly so that the following procedure can be performed without any problem.

a. With the ignition key in the key cylinder and the ignition switch ON, perform tilt-down and telescoping operation by adjusting the tilt and telescopic switch.
b. Disconnect the negative cable of the battery with the ignition key in the key cylinder.
c. Remove the ignition key from the key cylinder.

4. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL LH
5. REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
6. REMOVE COWL SIDE TRIM SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
7. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY LOWER
8. REMOVE DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY
9. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL NO.3 COVER LOWER
10. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL NO.2 COVER LOWER
11. REMOVE STEERING PAD





12. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.
b. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and main shaft assembly.
c. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly.
SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05031)

13. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER





a. Remove the 3 screws.
b. Disengage the 2 claws and remove the steering column cover lower.

NOTICE: Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch.





c. Disengage the claw and remove the steering column cover upper.





14. REMOVE TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH
a. Disconnect the connector.
b. Using a screwdriver, disengage the claw and pull out the tilt and telescopic switch.

NOTICE: Pushing on the claw too hard will break the claw.

HINT: Tape the screwdriver tip before use.





15. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the connectors from the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly.
b. Using pliers, grip the claws of the clip and remove the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.





16. REMOVE AIR DUCT NO.1
a. Remove the bolt.
b. Disengage the 3 claws and remove the air duct No.1.

17. SEPARATE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY





a. Loosen the bolt (A) and remove the clamp from the steering column hole shield.
b. Loosen the bolt (B)

HINT: Do not remove the bolt (B).





c. Remove the bolt, and then slide the steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly.

NOTICE: Do not separate the steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly.





d. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly and the power steering link assembly
e. Separate the steering intermediate shaft subassembly from the power steering link assembly.

18. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PLATE





19. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps from the steering column assembly
b. Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and the steering column assembly.





20. REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly and the steering shaft universal joint assembly.
b. Remove the bolt and the steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly.





21. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY NO.2
a. Remove steering column hole cover sub-assembly No.2 from the steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly.





22. REMOVE STEERING SHAFT UNIVERSAL JOINT ASSEMBLY
a. Put matchmarks on the steering shaft universal joint assembly and the steering column assembly.
b. Remove the bolt and the steering shaft universal joint assembly.

DISASSEMBLY





1. REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER
a. Using a screwdriver, widen the claws hanging onto the steering column upper bracket by approximately 1.0 mm (0.039 inch).
b. Pull out the transponder key amplifier with the claw open.

NOTICE: Using excessive force may damage the case.





2. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN UPPER WITH SWITCH BRACKET ASSEMBLY
a. Using a center punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
b. Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 inch) drill, drill a hole in the 2 tapered-head bolts.
c. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 tapered-head bolts and steering column upper with switch bracket assembly from the steering column assembly





3. REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
a. Put the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly in the ACC position.
b. Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver, and pull out the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly.

4. REMOVE UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY





a. Separate the un-lock warning switch assembly connector from the ignition or starter switch assembly.





b. Remove the un-lock warning switch assembly by pushing up the center part and releasing the 2 claws.





c. Disengage the secondary locking device of the unlock warning switch assembly connector.
d. Using a screwdriver, disengage the locking lug of terminals 3 and 4, and pull the terminals out from the rear side of the un-lock warning switch assembly connector.





5. REMOVE KEY INTER LOCK SOLENOID
a. Remove the 2 screws and key inter lock solenoid from the steering column upper with switch bracket assembly.





6. REMOVE IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 2 screws and ignition or starter switch assembly from the steering column upper with switch bracket assembly

7. REMOVE MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU

INSPECTION
1. INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION





a. Check that the steering lock mechanism is activated when the key is removed.





b. Check that the steering lock mechanism is deactivated when the key is inserted and turned to the ACC position.

HINT: If there is any abnormality, replace the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly.

Tilt Motor Connector:





2. INSPECT TILT MOTOR
a. Connect the positive battery terminal to terminal TIM+ and the negative battery terminal to terminal TIM- of the tilt motor connector. Then confirm that the steering wheel tilts up.
OK: Steering wheel tilts up.
b. Connect the negative battery terminal to terminal TIM+ and the positive battery terminal to terminal TIM- of the tilt motor connector. Then confirm that the steering wheel tilts down.
OK: Steering wheel tilts down.

Telescopic Motor Connector:





3. INSPECT TELESCOPIC MOTOR
a. Connect the positive battery terminal to terminal TEM+ and the negative battery terminal to terminal TEM- of the telescopic motor connector. Then confirm that the steering column contracts.
OK: Steering column contracts.
b. Connect the negative battery terminal to terminal TEM+ and the positive battery terminal to terminal TEM- of the telescopic motor connector. Then confirm that the steering column extends.
OK: Steering column extends.

REASSEMBLY
1. INSTALL MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU





2. INSTALL IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Install the ignition or starter switch assembly to the steering column upper with switch bracket assembly with the 2 screws.





3. INSTALL KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID
a. Instal the key inter lock solenoid to the steering column upper with switch bracket assembly with the 2 screws.

4. INSTALL UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY





a. Install the un-lock warning switch assembly to the steering column upper with switch bracket assembly.





b. Connect terminals 3 and 4 of the un-lock warning switch assembly connector.
c. Engage the secondary locking device.





d. Connect the un-lock warning switch assembly connector to the ignition or starter switch assembly.

5. INSTALL IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
a. Make sure the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly is in the ACC position.
b. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly
c. Make sure that the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly is securely installed.

6. INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION





7. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN UPPER WITH SWITCH BRACKET ASSEMBLY
a. Temporarily install the steering column upper with switch bracket assembly with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
b. Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.





8. INSTALL TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER
a. Align the transponder key amplifier with the installation position of the upper bracket with the amplifier inclined.
b. Push the transponder key amplifier up and install it to the upper bracket.

NOTICE: Do not push the amplifier up with excessive force.

INSTALLATION

NOTICE: When installing, coat the parts indicated by arrows with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease.





1. INSTALL STEERING SHAFT UNIVERSAL JOINT ASSEMBLY
a. Align the matchmarks on the steering shaft universal joint assembly and the steering column assembly.
b. Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)





2. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY NO.2
a. Apply molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease to the lip of the steering column hole cover sub-assembly No.2.
b. Install the steering column hole cover sub-assembly No.2 to the steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly.





3. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Align the matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly and the steering shaft universal joint assembly.
b. Temporarily install the bolt.

HINT: Do not tighten the bolt.





4. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
a. Install the steering column assembly with the 2 bolts and 2 nuts.
Torque: 26 Nm (265 kgf-cm, 19 ft. lbs.)
b. Connect the connectors to the steering column assembly.
c. Install the wire harness clamps to the steering column assembly

5. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PLATE
6. CONNECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY





a. Align matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly and the power steering link assembly





b. Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)





c. Tighten the bolt (B).
Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)
d. Install the clamp to the steering column hole shield and tighten the bolt (A).





7. INSTALL AIR DUCT NO.1
a. Engage the 2 claws to install the air duct No.1.
b. Install the bolt.

8. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD





9. INSTALL TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Install the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly to the steering column assembly with the clamp.





10. INSTALL TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH
a. Engage the claw to install the tilt and telescopic switch.
b. Connect the connector.

11. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER





a. Engage the claw to install the steering column cover upper.





b. Engage the 2 claws to install the steering column cover lower.

NOTICE: Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch.

c. Install the 3 screws.

12. ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
13. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
a. Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and steering main shaft assembly.
b. Install the steering wheel assembly set nut.
Torque: 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.)

14. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
15. INSTALL STEERING PAD
16. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL NO.3 COVER LOWER
17. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL NO.2 COVER LOWER
18. INSTALL DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY
19. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY LOWER
20. INSTALL COWL SIDE TRIM SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
21. INSTALL FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
22. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL LH
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)

23. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
24. CHECK FOR DTCs (POWER TILT AND POWER TELESCOPIC STEERING COLUMN)
25. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
26. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
a. Some systems need initialization when disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal.
