Radiator Cooling Fan: Testing and Inspection

Fig. 4 Checking Fan Motor.:

Fig. 5 Checking Water Temperature Switch.:

Refer to Figs. 4 and 5, for cooling fan wiring circuits.
1. Turn ignition switch to ON position.
2. With coolant temperature below 185°F, ensure that fans do not operate.
3. If fan does operate, check cooling fan relays and water temperature sensor. Check for separated connector or severed wire between cooling fan relay and water temperature sensor.
4. Disconnect water temperature sensor electrical connector and ensure that fan rotates. If fan does not run, check cooling fan relays, fan motor, engine main relay and fuse. Check for a short circuit between the cooling fan relay and water temperature sensor, then connect temperature sensor connector.
5. Start engine and raise coolant temperature to 185-194°F.
6. Check that fan assembly operates at low speed, if not, replace water temperature sensor.
7. Start engine and raise coolant temperature above 194°F.
8. Ensure that fans operate at high speed, if not, replace water temperature sensor.
9. Connect an ammeter and battery to fan motor connectors, Fig. 4. Check that motor rotates smoothly. Specified current on No. 1 connector is 12.1-15.1 amps. No. 2 connector amperage is 6.0-7.4
