Engine: Service and Repair

Refer to Figs. 1, 3 and 4 when performing the following procedure.
1. Disable airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
2. Remove hood, then the battery.
3. Remove engine undercovers.
4. Drain coolant and engine oil.
5. Remove suspension upper brace.
6. Disconnect igniter, noise filter and high tension cord connectors, then remove the ignition coil, igniter and bracket assembly.
7. Remove radiator.
8. Remove alternator, then the alternator belt adjusting bar.
9. Remove radiator reservoir tank.
10. Disconnect accelerator cable and throttle cable, if equipped, from throttle body.
11. Remove cruise actuator dust cover. Disconnect vacuum hoses and connector, then remove actuator and bracket.
12. Disconnect cruise vacuum pump connector, then remove vacuum pump and bracket.
13. Remove air cleaner as follows:
a. Disconnect air flow meter connector.
b. Remove ISC valve air hose and vacuum pipe air hose.
c. Disconnect air cleaner cap clips.
d. Disconnect air cleaner hose, then remove air cleaner assembly.
e. Remove air cleaner element, then the air cleaner case.
14. Disconnect the following wires, connectors and vacuum hoses:
a. Check connector.
b. Ground straps from lefthand fender apron.
c. Connectors from relay box.
d. Engine compartment wire connector.
e. Brake booster hose from intake.
f. Air conditioner control valve hose from intake.
g. Air conditioner control valve hose from vacuum pipe on intake.
h. Charcoal canister vacuum hose from vacuum pipe on intake.
i. Disconnect ground strap from transaxle.
15. Disconnect heater and fuel hoses.

16. On manual transmission models, remove starter, then the clutch release cylinder and tube clamp without disconnecting tube, Fig. 5.
17. On all models, disconnect speedometer cable and transaxle control cables.
18. Disconnect engine wiring harness as follows:
a. Remove undercover.
b. Remove glove box.
c. Disconnect ECT ECU, circuit opening relay, cowl wire and instrument panel wire connectors.
d. Pull out engine wiring harness from cowl panel.
19. Remove suspension lower crossmember.
20. Remove front exhaust pipe.

21. Unfasten A/C compressor and position aside, leaving refrigerant lines attached, Fig. 6.
22. Remove driveshafts.
23. Remove power steering pump, leaving hose connected.
24. Remove engine mounting center crossmember.
25. Remove front engine mounting insulator and bracket.
26. Remove center engine mounting insulator and bracket.
27. Remove rear engine mounting insulator and bracket.
28. Remove power steering reservoir tank, leaving hoses connected.

29. Remove engine righthand mounting stays, Fig. 7.
30. Remove lefthand engine mounting stay.
31. Remove engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle as follows:
a. Attach chain and hoist to engine hangers.
b. Remove clamp bolts of power steering oil cooler pipes.
c. Remove righthand mounting insulator.
d. Remove lefthand mounting insulator and bracket.
e. Carefully lift engine out of vehicle.
f. Place engine and transaxle on stand.
32. On models with automatic transmissions, remove starter.
33. On all models, separate engine and transaxle.
34. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS/MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS/TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS for torque values.
b. Rearm airbag system as previously described.
