Deployment When Disposing of Steering Wheel Pad


Scrapped Vehicle
If a vehicle is going to be scrapped, but it has an undeployed airbag, the airbag must be deployed before scrapping.

1. Disable airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
2. Remove No. 1 undercover and disconnect airbag connector to spiral cable, Fig. 49.
3. Connect airbag deployment too 09082-00700, or equivalent, to spiral cable connector.
4. Move deployment tool at least 33 feet from the vehicle. Close all doors and windows of vehicle.
5. Connect battery terminals of deployment tool to battery source. Press the deployment tool button and deploy airbag.

Wheel Pad Only
1. Remove wheel pad as described under COMPONENT R & R PROCEDURES/STEERING WHEEL PAD & SPIRAL CABLE.
2. Using bolts and washers, bolt wheel pad to a discarded tire and rim. Carefully tighten wheel pad.

3. Using three pieces of thick wiring harness, wrap the harness at least two times around each bolt of the wheel pad. Then wrap the harness through the wheel nut holes and securely tie off, Fig. 51.
4. Connect deployment tool 09082-00700, or equivalent, to the airbag connector from underneath the the wheel. Move deployment tool at least 33 feet away from wheel.

5. Ensure wheel pad is facing upward. Cover wheel and pad with a large cardboard box. Weigh down box in four places, Fig. 52.
6. Connect battery terminals of deployment too to battery source. Press deployment button and deploy airbag.
