Title
PRELOAD ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE FOR POWER TELESCOPIC MECHANISM
If a rattling noise occurs from the steering column on vehicles equipped with power telescopic steering wheels, the Pre-load on the Power Telescopic Mechanism should be checked. The following procedure has been developed to assist in these Pre-load adjustments.
CAUTION:
Whenever performing repairs that involve removing the steering wheel, refer to the repair manual (page AB-16) for the proper procedure and care to be taken when working with the SRS system.
ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE:
A) Using SST (09617-14010), remove the adjusting screw lock nuts as shown in Fig 1.
B) Using SST (09923-30140), tighten the adjusting screw to 61 in.lb, (6.9 N-m, 70 kgf-cm) as shown in Fig 2.
NOTICE:
If the adjusting screw is not properly torqued, the telescopic mechanism may not operate correctly or a rattle may develop from the column area.
C) Install the lock nut and conical springs making sure to install the conical spring facing in the direction shown in Fig 3.
D) Using both SST's to prevent rotation of the adjusting screws, tighten the lock nuts to 23 ft.lb. (31 N-m, 320 kgf-cm) as shown in Fig 4.
NOTE:
It is recommended that a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 13.39 in. (340 mm) be used to obtain the proper tightening torque.
