Moonroof - Wind Noise
90lexus04 BODY 009 09-28-90 LS400Title LS400: MOONROOF WIND NOISE
CONDITION:
The LS400 moonroof may be the source of wind noise:
The symptoms of this condition are noticeable when the vehicle is in motion with the moonroof closed. The noise becomes louder when the moonroof shade is open.
CORRECTION:
The following procedures should be followed to repair a wind noise condition:
1. The moonroof panel alignment must first be inspected and, if necessary corrected using the following procedure:
^ With the engine on, fully close the moonroof using the moonroof control switch. Turn off engine and remove key.
^ Measure the visible difference in level (Dimension "A" in sketch) between the moonroof panel weatherstrip and sheetmetal roof at the corners of the moonroof. The measurements should be within the specifications below:
NOTE: Proper adjustment may result in a slight underflush condition at the center rear edge of the moonroof but does not cause a wind noise condition.
If the moonroof is not within the above specifications, proceed with the following procedures beginning with Step 2. If the moonroof is within the above specifications, proceed to Step 10.
2. Remove moonroof side garnishes
^ Using a screwdriver with the tip wrapped with tape, remove the two moonroof side garnishes.
3. Remove moonroof panel
^ Remove six nuts and the shim plates.
^ Lift the moonroof panel out of the roof opening.
4. Inspect moonroof drive rail alignment
^ Locate the alignment marks in the sliding sections of the drive rail as shown.
^ If the alignment marks are not aligned, proceed to the next step; if they are aligned, skip to Step 9.
5. Remove map light
^ Using a screwdriver with the tip wrapped with tape, remove map light lens.
^ Remove three screws and the switch/light panel.
^ Disconnect the two connectors.
6. Lower moonroof drive gear assembly
^ Remove four bolts and allow the drive motor/gear assembly to hang by the wire harness.
^ Using a screwdriver, slide the moonroof link forward or backward to align the two marks as shown.
7. Replace the moonroof drive gear assembly
^ Re-position the drive gear assembly, making sure the drive gear meshes with the drive cables.
^ Re-install the four drive mounting bolts.
8. Remount the map light lens.
^ Reconnect the two wiring connectors.
^ Re-install the three map light mounting screws.
^ Remount the map light lens.
9. Re-install the moonroof panel
^ Re-install the moonroof panel shims (Note that the front and rear shims are not interchangeable.)
^ Re-install the nuts, but do not fully tighten.
^ Center the moonroof panel in the roof opening such that the left to right and front to back clearances are equal
^ Fully tighten the six nuts.
^ Measure the difference in level between the moonroof panel weatherstrip and sheetmetal roof at the corners of the moonroof. The measurements should be within the specifications below:
^ If the level difference is not within specification, it can be corrected by adding or removing shims. The applicable part numbers are listed below:
10. Carefully inspect the clearance between the moonroof panel and the moonroof opening at the corners. If there is any gap between the roof opening corner and the corner of the moonroof panel, a wind noise will be apparent. In there are gaps, after all of the above adjustments have been performed, it may be necessary to add material under the moonroof panel weatherstrip:
^ Obtain Scotch Black Vinyl Foam Tape (051131-06375) or any single side adhesive foam tape in 1/16" to 1/8" thickness.
^ Cut several strips 1/4" wide by 2" long.
^ Roll back the moonroof weatherstrip at the affected corner as shown.
^ Apply one strip of 1/8" tape or two strips of 1/16" tape.
11. Place the moonroof in position to verify that the corner gaps have been eliminated. If necessary, add additional foam tape strips.
12. Re-install the six moonroof mounting bolts. Re-install the two interior moonroof garnishes. Cycle the moonroof several times to verify correct operation.
