Crankshaft Position Sensor: Service and Repair

NOTE: The cam position and engine speed sensors are not serviceable as individual units. If found to be defective, the distributor must be replaced.

Distributor Components:

REMOVAL

DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE TERMINAL OF BATTERY

CAUTION (W / Airbag): Work must be started after approx. 30 seconds or longer from the time the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery.

Air Cleaner Hose:

REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP, MASS AIR FLOW AND AIR CLEANER HOSE

(a) Disconnect the mass air flow connector.

(b) Disconnect the mass air flow wire from the clamp on the mass air flow.

(c) Disconnect the air hoses.

(d) Loosen the air cleaner hose clamp bolt.

(e) Disconnect the four air cleaner cap clips.

(f) Disconnect the air cleaner hose from the throttle body, and remove the air cleaner cap together with the mass air flow and air cleaner hose.

Wire Holder:

DISCONNECT HIGH-TENSION CORDS FROM DISTRIBUTOR CAP AND IGNITION COIL

(a) Using a screwdriver, lift up the lock claw and disconnect the holder from the distributor cap (ignition coil).

Ignition Cord Removal And Installation:

(b) Disconnect the high-tension cord at the grommet. DO NOT pull on the cord.

NOTICE:

^ Pulling on or bending the cords may damage the conductor inside.
^ Do not wipe any of the oil from the grommet after the high-tension cord is disconnected.


DISCONNECT DISTRIBUTOR CONNECTOR

Distributor Hold-down Bolts:

REMOVE DISTRIBUTOR

(a) Remove the hold-down bolts and pull out the distributor.

(b) Remove the O-ring from the distributor housing.

Finding TDC:

INSTALLATION

SET NO. 1 CYLINDER TO TDC/COMPRESSION Turn the crankshaft clockwise, and position the slit of the intake camshaft (RH cylinder head) as shown. Look at the distributor attachment hole to set.

Installing O-ring:

INSTALL DISTRIBUTOR

(a) Install a new O-ring to the housing.

(b) Apply a light coat of engine oil on the O-ring.

Aligning Distributor:

(c) Align the cutout marks of the coupling and housing.

Installing Distributor:

(d) Insert the distributor, aligning the line of the housing with the cutout of the distributor attachment bearing cap.

(e) Lightly tighten the two hold-down bolts.

COMPLETE INSTALLATION

(a) Reconnect electrical connectors and ignition wires.

(b) Reinstall air cleaner components.

(c) Adjust ignition timing, refer to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES for information.
