Disassembly and Reassembly


Disassembly

1. Remove ignition key cylinder illumination, Figs. 21 and 22.
2. Remove No. 2 intermediate shaft.
3. Remove lower dust cover.

4. Remove dust seal, Fig. 23.

5. On models equipped with manual telescopic column, remove tilt position sensor, Fig. 24.
6. On models equipped with power telescopic column, remove telescopic sensor plate.

7. Remove tilt and telescopic position sensor, Fig. 25.
8. On all models, remove turn signal bracket, Fig. 26.
9. Remove tilt steering gear protectors.
10. Remove connector bracket, Figs. 21 and 22.

11. Remove upper bracket as follows:
a. Using a centering punch, mark center of tapered head bolts.
b. Using a 0.16-0.20 inch drill, drill into tapered head bolts, Fig. 27.
c. Using a screw extractor, remove tapered head bolts.
d. Remove two bolts, then separate upper bracket and breakaway bracket.

12. Remove tilt steering with motor as follows:
a. Remove two retaining nuts, spacers, springs, bushings and bond cable, Fig. 28.
b. Using tool No. SST 09213-54015 and a plate washer, remove No. 2 tilt steering shafts, Fig. 29.
c. Remove steering gear assembly, then two bushings and support stopper bolts.
13. On models with manual telescopic column, proceed as follows:
a. Remove telescopic lever serration attachment.
b. Remove telescopic lever retaining bolt, collar, lever and washer.
c. Remove telescopic lever ball and compression spring.

d. Install a double nut on telescopic lever lock bolt, then remove lock bolt, Fig. 30.
e. Remove steering column tube stopper bolt.
f. Using snap ring pliers, remove snap ring from main shaft.
g. Remove breakaway bracket from main shaft. Ensure the spline part of main shaft does not come loose.
h. Remove No. 1 and 2 telescopic spring seats and compressor spring from lower tube.
i. Remove steering shaft thrust stopper from breakaway bracket.
j. Remove two lock wedges from breakaway bracket.
14. On all models, using tool No. SST 09213-54015 and a plate washer, remove two tilt steering shafts, Fig. 31.
15. Remove upper tube and main shaft from lower tube.
16. Remove tilt steering housing support.
17. Remove main shaft as follows:
a. Using tool No. SST 09950-20017 or equivalent, compress main shaft spring and remove snap ring.
b. Remove main shaft from upper tube.
c. Remove spring, thrust collar and bearing.

Assembly

1. Install main shaft as follows:
a. Install bearing, thrust collar and spring to main shaft.
b. Insert main shaft into upper tube.
c. Using tool No. SST 09950-20017 or equivalent, compress main shaft spring and install snap ring.
2. Install tilt steering housing support and torque to 9 ft. lbs.

3. Install upper tube with main shaft as follows:
a. Insert upper tube and main shaft into lower tube, then using a vise, press two tilt steering shafts, Fig. 32. After pressing steering shafts, ensure upper tube turns smoothly.
4. On manual telescopic column, proceed as follows:
a. Install two lock wedges to breakaway bracket. Ensure not to get grease on lock wedges.
b. Install steering shaft thrust stopper to breakaway bracket.
c. Install No. 1 and 2 telescopic spring seats and compression spring.
d. Install breakaway bracket to main shaft. Ensure the spline part of the main shaft does not separate.
e. Using snap ring pliers, install snap ring to main shaft.
f. Install steering column tube stopper bolt and torque to 14 ft. lbs.
g. Install telescopic lever lock bolt as follows:
1. Pull steering column tube away from breakaway bracket and turn the body installation surface of the breakaway bracket upward, then temporarily install lock bolt.
2. Install a double nut on the lock bolt and torque to 12 ft. lbs.
3. Loosen lock bolt one turn, then torque to 65 inch lbs.
h. Install telescopic lever as follows:
1. Install compression spring and ball.
2. Install washer, lever, collar and bolt.
3. Torque bolt to 19 ft. lbs. Torque bolt with the depression of the lever matching the position of the ball.
i. Install telescopic lever serration attachment as follows:
1. Rotate telescopic lever until lever make contact with breakaway bracket.
2. Install serration attachment so the alignment marks on the telescopic lever and serration attachment align and torque to 9 ft. lbs.

5. On all models, install tilt steering gear assembly with motor as follows:
a. Install two bushings and support stopper bolts, Fig. 33.
b. Using a vise, press the two No. 2 tilt steering shafts, Fig. 34.
c. Install bushing, spring and spacer to each stopper bolt.
d. Install bond cable.
e. Install new locknuts and torque to 26 inch lbs.
6. Install upper bracket with two new tapered head bolts. Tighten tapered head bolts until bolt heads break off.
7. Install connector bracket and torque to 43 inch lbs.
8. Install tilt steering gear protectors.
9. Install turn signal bracket. Ensure upper surface is parallel with upper surface of the capsule to the breakaway bracket.
10. On manual telescopic models, install tilt position sensor.
11. On power telescopic models, install tilt and telescopic sensors.
12. On power telescopic models, install telescopic sensor plate.

13. On all models, using a press, install lower dust cover, Fig. 35.
14. Install No. 2 intermediate shaft and torque to 26 ft. lbs.
15. Install ignition key cylinder illumination.
16. Check telescopic operation. Ensure there is no axial play when lever is turned fully counterclockwise and the main shaft moves smoothly when lever is turned clockwise.
