Wiper Relay: Testing and Inspection

Fig. 23 Wiper Relay Connector Terminal Identification:

Refer to Fig. 23 when testing wiper relay.
1. Inspect continuity as follows:
a. Ensure continuity exists between terminals 1 and 5.
b. Ensure continuity does not exist between terminals 1 and 2.
c. If continuity is not as specified, replace relay.
2. Inspect relay operation at intermittent setting as follows:
a. Connect battery positive to terminal 2 and negative lead to terminal 7.
b. Connect positive lead of voltmeter to terminal 5 and negative lead to terminal 7. Ensure there is no voltage.

c. Connect negative lead from battery terminal to terminal 4. Ensure voltage changes as in Fig. 24.

Fig. 25 Intermittent Operation Test 2:

d. Connect terminals 3 and 8. Ensure voltage changes as in Fig. 25.
e. If either test is not as specified, replace relay.
3. Inspect operation at washer linked as follows:
a. Connect battery positive to terminal 2 and negative to terminal 7.
b. Connect positive lead from voltmeter to terminal 5 and negative lead to terminal 7.
c. Connect negative lead from battery to terminal 10. Ensure voltage goes from no voltage to battery voltage.
d. Disconnect negative lead from terminal 10. Ensure voltage goes from battery voltage to no voltage in approximately 2.5 seconds.
e. If either test is not as specified, replace relay.
