Engine: Service and Repair

Refer to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 when performing the following procedure.
1. Disable airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
2. Remove engine undercover, then drain engine coolant.
3. Disconnect control cables from throttle body, then remove air cleaner.
4. Remove drive belt, fan with fluid coupling and water pump pulley.
5. Remove radiator and charcoal canister.

6. Disconnect power steering pump, Fig. 4. Do not disconnect hoses.
7. Remove A/C compressor, Fig. 5. Do not disconnect hoses.
8. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose from the union and fuel return hose from engine oil dipstick guide clamp and No. 2 fuel pipe. Plug fuel hose end.
9. Disconnect two connectors from engine room main wire harness, igniter connector and theft deterrent horn connector.
10. Using a 6 mm hexagon wrench, remove connector bracket bolt and bracket, then disconnect wire clamp, power steering solenoid valve connector, ground strap from cylinder block and power steering pressure switch connector.
11. Disconnect ignition coil connector and noise filter connector.
12. Remove cap and nut, then disconnect alternator wire.
13. Disconnect VSV vacuum hose from check valve, heater water hose from heater water valve, heater water hose from water-by-pass pipe, and VSV connector.
14. On manual transmission models, remove transmission shift lever.

15. On all models, Disconnect engine wire harness from passenger compartment, Figs. 3 and 6.
16. Disconnect power steering pipe from engine, Fig. 7.
17. Remove union bolt and two gaskets, then disconnect fuel inlet hose. Suspend hose union end upward.
18. Remove starter, then disconnect ground wire from engine.
19. On manual transmission models, disconnect clutch release cylinder from transmission.
20. On all models, remove No. 2 exhaust pipe and exhaust pipe heat insulator.
21. On automatic transmission models, disconnect transmission control rod.
22. On all models, remove two propeller shaft center support bearing set bolts and adjusting washers.

23. Place matchmarks on both flanges, then remove four bolts, washers, nuts and intermediate shaft, Fig. 9. Insert tool 09325-20010 for manual transmissions or tool No. 09325-40010 for automatic transmissions in transmission tail shaft to prevent oil leakage.
24. Attach engine hoist chain to engine hangers, then remove two nuts holding engine to suspension crossmember, Fig. 8.
25. Remove four bolts, four nuts and rear engine mounting member.
26. Lift engine out of vehicle, then place engine and transmission on a stand.
27. Separate engine and transmission.
28. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS/MECHANICAL SPECIFICATION/TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS for torque values.
b. Rearm airbag system as previously described.
