Removal
1. Refer to Fig. 8 when removing rear axle hub and carrier.
2. Remove rear axle hub as follows:
a. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove rear wheel and tire assemblies.
b. Place a dial indicator near the center of axle hub and check backlash in bearing shaft direction, Fig. 3. Bearing backlash should not exceed .0020 inch. If backlash is greater than specified, replace bearing.
c. Using a dial indicator, check deviation at surface of axle hub outside hub bolt, Fig. 4 Maximum deviation should not exceed .0028 inch. If deviation is greater than specified, replace axle shaft and bearing.
d. Remove driveshaft locknut.
e. Remove driveshaft as described under REAR DRIVE SHAFT.
f. Remove parking brake shoes as described under DISC AND DRUM BRAKES/COMPONENT R & R/REAR DISC BRAKES & PARKING BRAKES/PARKING BRAKES, DISASSEMBLY.
g. Remove ABS sensor.
3. Remove rear axle carrier and hub assembly as follows:
a. Remove two bolts holding parking brake cable.

b. Remove two backing plate bolts.
c. Remove hexagon bolt on backside of axle carrier, Fig. 9.
d. Slide backing plate to the outside and disconnect parking brake cable.
e. Disconnect strut rod from axle carrier.

f. Remove nut from No. 1 lower suspension arm, then using special service tool No. 09628-10011 or equivalent, disconnect suspension arm, Fig. 10.
g. Remove nut from No. 2 lower suspension arm, then using special service tool No. 09610-20012 or equivalent, disconnect suspension arm, Fig. 11.
h. Remove upper ball joint nut and using special service tool No. 09628-62011 or equivalent, separate axle carrier from ball joint, Fig. 12. Ensure care is taken not to damage dust boot.
4. Remove axle hub from axle carrier as follows:
a. Remove dust reflector using a screwdriver.

b. Mount axle carrier in a vise, then using special service tool No. 09308-00010 or equivalent, remove oil seal, Fig. 13.
c. Using special service tool No. 09950-20017 or equivalent, remove axle hub from axle carrier, Fig. 14.
d. Using special service tool No. 09950-20017 or equivalent, remove inner race (outside) from axle hub, Fig. 15.

e. Using special service tool No. 09308-00010 or equivalent, remove outer oil seal, Fig. 16.
f. Remove snap ring with snap ring pliers, Fig. 17.
g. Temporarily install inner race (inside) to bearing and using a press and special service tools Nos. 09608-35014, 09608-06020 and 09608-6100 or equivalents, remove bearing, Fig. 18.
Installation
1. Install rear axle hub as follows:
a. Install bearing to axle hub using a press and special service tools Nos. 09309-36010 and 09608-32010 or equivalents.
b. Install snap ring with snap ring pliers.

c. Install inner race (outside), then using a hammer and special service tool No. 09608-32010 or equivalent, install new oil seal (outer), Fig. 19.
d. Temporarily install backing plate, then install inner race (inside).

e. Using a press and special service tools Nos. 09608-32010, 09608-35014, 09608-06020 and 09608-06100 or equivalents, install axle hub, Fig. 20.

f. Using a hammer and special service tools Nos. 09608-32010, 09223-41020 or equivalents, install oil seal (inner), Fig. 21.

g. Using a press and special service tools Nos. 09608-32010, 09608-35014 and 09608-06160 or equivalents, install new dust deflector, Fig. 22.
2. Install rear axle carrier and hub assembly as follows:
a. Connect rear axle hub and carrier to upper ball joint and torque nut to 80 ft. lbs.
b. Connect No. 2 lower suspension arm to axle carrier and torque nut to 110 ft. lbs.
c. Connect No. 1 lower suspension arm to axle carrier and torque nut to 43 ft. lbs.
d. Connect strut rod to axle carrier and temporarily install bolt and nut.
e. Connect parking brake cable and slide backing plate to the inside.
f. Install hexagon bolt on backside of axle carrier and torque to 132 ft. lbs.
g. Install two backing plate bolts and torque to 19 ft. lbs.
h. Install two bolts holding parking brake cable and torque to 69 inch lbs.
i. Install parking brake shoes as described under DISC AND DRUM BRAKES/COMPONENT R & R/REAR DISC BRAKES & PARKING BRAKES/PARKING BRAKES, DISASSEMBLY.
j. Install ABS sensor and torque to 69 inch lbs.
k. Install driveshaft as described under REAR DRIVESHAFT.
l. Install disc rotor and brake cylinder, then install driveshaft locknut and torque to 213 ft. lbs.
3. Install rear wheel and lower vehicle, then bounce vehicle up and down several times to stabilize suspension.
4. Raise and support vehicle and remove rear wheel.
5. Support axle carrier with a jack and torque strut rod bolt to 136 ft. lbs.
6. Install rear wheel and lower vehicle, then check rear wheel alignment.
