Engine: Service and Repair












1. On models with audio anti-theft code, refer to Technician Safety Information for code procedures. On models with air bag system, disarm airbag system as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
2. Remove battery and tray, then the hood.
3. Raise and support vehicle, then drain engine oil and coolant.
4. Disconnect accelerator and throttle cables.
5. Remove air cleaner cap, volume air flow meter and air cleaner hose, as follows:
a. Disconnect volume air flow meter connector, wire clamp and accelerator cable clamp.
b. Disconnect PCV hose and loosen air cleaner hose clamp bolt.
c. Disconnect four air cleaner cap clips, then remove air cleaner cap and volume air flow meter together with air cleaner hose.
d. Remove air cleaner element and three bolts, then the air cleaner case.
6. On models with cruise control, remove cruise control actuator.
7. Remove radiator, then disconnect engine wiring as follows:
a. Two bolts to engine relay box.
b. Five connectors from relay box.
c. Two igniter connectors and noise filter connector.
d. Connector from lefthand fender apron and two ground straps.
8. Disconnect engine attaching vacuum hoses and heater hoses.
9. Place suitable container below fuel lines, then disconnect lines.
10. Disconnect transaxle control cable from transaxle.
11. Disconnect passenger compartment engine control wiring electrical connectors as follows:
a. Three ECM connectors.
b. Five cowl connectors.
c. Cooling fan ECU connector.
d. Wire clamp, then remove two nuts and pull engine wire from cowl panel.
12. Remove A/C compressor leaving pressure hoses connected. Position compressor and hoses aside.
13. Remove front exhaust pipe.
14. Remove both drive axles, then the power steering pressure tube.
15. Disconnect hydraulic cooling fan pressure hose.
16. Remove power steering pump, do not disconnect hoses and position aside.
17. Remove four left engine mount attaching bolts, then disconnect mount.
18. Remove two right rear engine mount hole plugs, then the four bolts and mount.
19. Remove four engine mounting shock absorber attaching bolts.
20. Remove three front right engine mount attaching bolts, then the mount.
21. Install suitable engine lifting equipment, then remove coolant reservoir tank.
22. Disconnect all ground straps, then remove No. 1 righthand engine mount three attaching bolts and mount.
23. Remove engine moving control rod and No. 2 right engine mount.
24. Remove engine and transaxle assembly, then the starter.
25. Separate engine/transaxle assembly.
26. Reverse procedure to install.
27. Reset coded audio anti-theft system, if necessary, as outlined under Technician Safety Information. On models with air bag system, rearm airbag system as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
