Dashboard / Instrument Panel: Service and Repair

1. Disable airbag system as outlined under Air bag Arming & Disarming Procedures/Airbag Arming and Disarming.

2. Tilt down and pull out steering wheel, Fig. 17.
3. Disconnect battery ground cable then wait at least 90 seconds to begin work.
4. Tape flat end of screwdriver to prevent damage to front scuff plate, then pry out front side of clip. Using a clip remover, remove scuff plate. Repeat for rear scuff plate (pry out rear side of clip).

5. Remove center pillar lower garnish, Fig. 18,then pry out shoulder belt anchor cover and shoulder belt anchor.
6. Disconnect front seat belt retractor connectors, then remove two bolts and retractor.
7. Pry out four covers for seat track, then remove four front seat bolts, disconnect connector and remove front seat with seat belt.
8. Remove roof side inner garnish and disconnect connector.
9. Remove front pillar garnish.
10. Remove steering wheel and steering column cover.
11. Remove cluster finish panel.
12. Remove undercover No. 1, then disconnect connector and light.
13. Remove finish plate and end pad.
14. Remove outside rear view mirror switch, then disconnect connectors.
15. Remove two lower pad screws, hood lock release lever, five bolts and screw, then lower pad.
16. Remove heater to register duct No. 2.
17. Disconnect combination switch connectors, remove four screws and switch.
18. Remove four combination meter screws, meter and disconnect connectors.
19. Remove under panel No. 2.
20. Remove glove box door as follows:
a. Remove glove box finish plate inside glove box. Ensure not to damage airbag wire harness or connector.
b. Pull up on connector, disconnect airbag connector.
c. Remove two bolts, three screws and door.
d. Disconnect connectors.
21. Remove seven front passenger airbag assembly bolts, then airbag assembly.
22. Remove register No. 3 and disconnect connectors.
23. Remove front ash receptacle, then radio and A/C control assembly.
24. Remove shift lever knob by sliding shaft collar downward and removing two screws.
25. Pry out rear side of upper console panel, disconnect connectors, then pull panel backward to remove.
26. Remove console box register, then disconnect connector.
27. Remove console box carpet, two screws, rear console lower box, then two bolts and three screws to take out console box.
28. Remove console mounting box bracket clips, then disconnect floor carpet. Remove two screws and bracket No. 1 from duct, then two bolts and bracket No. 3.
29. Remove three console box duct screws, duct, then screw and duct No. 1.
30. Remove side defroster nozzle Nos. 1 and 2.
31. Remove air heater guide as follows:
a. Insert screwdriver into clip at top of guide.
b. While pressing down clip to release it from latch, pull guide toward you.
c. Grasp top of guide and pull toward you to remove guide.
32. Remove instrument panel as follows:
a. Disconnect connectors and hose.
b. Remove nut and antenna cable bracket.
c. Remove bolt and bond cable.
d. Remove nine bolts, nut and two screws.
e. Pull instrument panel rearward.
33. Remove heater to register duct No. 3.
34. Remove steering column assembly as follows:
a. Remove four nuts.
b. Disconnect spring from brake pedal.
c. Remove bolt from engine compartment.
d. Pull steering column.
35. Remove two bolts and lower mounting bracket No. 1, then two bolts and lower mounting bracket No. 2.
36. Remove instrument panel brace bolt, two nuts and brace No. 1, then bolt, nut and brace No. 2.
37. Remove instrument panel reinforcement as follows;
a. Remove two nuts and mounting bracket No. 1.
b. Remove two bolts and junction block No. 1.
c. Remove six bolts and four nuts.

d. Pull reinforcement rearward to remove, Fig. 19.
38. Reverse procedure to install noting the following:
a. Torque front seat to 27 ft. lb.
b. Torque front seat belt retractor (upper side) to 14 ft. lb.
c. Torque front seat belt retractor (lower side) to 32 ft. lb.
d. Torque Front seat belt shoulder anchor to 32 ft. lb.
e. Rearm airbag as outlined under Air bag Arming & Disarming Procedures/Airbag Arming and Disarming.
