3. Remove engine undercover, then drain engine coolant.
4. Drain engine oil, then the fuel tank into separate suitable containers.
5. Disconnect control cables from throttle body, then remove air cleaner duct.
6. Remove air cleaner, mass air flow (MAF) meter and intake air connector pipe.
7. Remove drive belt, then the radiator as outlined under Radiator, Service and Repair.
8. Disconnect igniter and ignition coil electrical connectors.
9. Disconnect wire harness from wire clamp and coolant reservoir.
10. Disconnect Alternator electrical connector, then remove rubber cap and nut and disconnect alternator wire.
11. Remove ground strap bolt, then disconnect ground strap from lefthand engine mounting bracket.
12. Remove rubber cap and nut, then disconnect starter wire.
13. Slowly loosen, then remove union bolt and two gaskets, then disconnect fuel inlet hose and suspend union end of hose upward. Place suitable container or rag under fuel pipe support. Plug openings to prevent contamination.
14. Disconnect fuel return hose from intake manifold stay and No. 2 fuel pipe. Plug openings to prevent contamination.
15. Disconnect power steering pump, Fig. 3, without disconnecting hoses, as follows:
Fig. 3 Power Steering Pump Replacement:
a. Disconnect air hoses from No. 4 timing belt cover and air intake chamber.
b. Remove pump rear stay bolts, then the rear stay.
c. Remove pump front bracket and pump bracket, then disconnect pump housing from engine. Put aside housing and suspend securely.
16. Remove A/C compressor, Fig. 4. Do not disconnect A/C compressor hoses.
Fig.4 A/C Compressor Replacement:
17. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose, then the EVAP and heater water hoses.
18. Disconnect heater water valve and engine wire from cowl panel.
19. Disconnect engine wire from cabin as follows:
a. Remove scuff plate, then the undercover.
b. Remove air heater guide, then the front side of floor carpet.
c. Remove ECM protector, then the ECM.
d. Disconnect ECM electrical connector, then the connector from cowl wire connector and pull out engine wire from cabin.
20. Disconnect sub heated oxygen sensor from front exhaust pipe, then remove front exhaust pipe assembly.
21. Remove No. 2 front exhaust pipe, Fig. 1, then the exhaust pipe heat insulator.
22. Remove rear center floor crossmember brace, then disconnect transmission control rod.
23. Remove propeller shaft and place suitable jack under transmission.
24. Remove rear support member, then attach suitable engine hoist chain to two engine hangers.
25. Remove hole plugs, then the engine front mounting insulator to front suspension crossmember nuts.
26. Lift engine from vehicle slowly and carefully, noting the following:
a. Do not damage A/C compressor or cooling fan.
b. Ensure engine is clear of all wiring, hoses and cables.
c. Place engine and transmission assembly in stand.
27. Separate engine and transmission as follows:
a. Remove transmission oil dipstick guide, then disconnect engine wire from transmission.
b. Remove starter as outlined in the Starting and Charging Systems/Starting System/Starter Motor.
c. Disconnect throttle cable from throttle body, then the throttle cable from cable bracket on cylinder head.
d. Remove A/T oil cooler pipes, then the torque converter clutch bolts. Turn crankshaft to access each bolt.
e. Remove transmission bolts, then separate engine and transmission.
28. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten to specifications.
29. If audio system was disabled, activate as outlined under Technician Safety Information. On models with air bag system, rearm airbag system as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
