Engine: Service and Repair

NOTE: On models with coded audio anti-theft systems, refer to Technician Safety Information for code procedures. On models with air bag system, disarm airbag system as outlined under Technician Safety Information.

1. Remove hood, then the engine undercover, Fig. 10.
2. Drain engine coolant and engine oil.
3. Drain fuel from fuel tank, then disconnect accelerator and cruise control cables from throttle body
4. Disconnect high tension cord from ignition coil, then from clamp on air cleaner.
5. Disconnect mass air flow (MAF) electrical connector.
6. Disconnect power steering air hose from No. 4 timing belt cover, then the PCV hose from No. 2 cylinder head cover.
7. Loosen hose clamp bolt mounting intake air connector pipe to throttle body.
8. Remove air cleaner mounting bolts, then the air cleaner, MAF meter and intake air connector pipe assembly.
9. Remove radiator assembly as outlined under Radiator, Service and Repair.
10. Disconnect EVAP vacuum and air hoses from canister, then remove the canister.
11. Disconnect power steering pump, Fig. 3. Do not disconnect hoses. Suspend pump out of way.

12. Remove A/C compressor, Fig. 4. Do not disconnect hoses. Suspend compressor out of way.

13. Disconnect engine wire and hoses as follows:
a. Disconnect EVAP hose from No. 2 vacuum pipe.
b. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose from union.
c. Disconnect fuel return hose from engine oil dipstick guide clamp and fuel return pipe. Plug all openings.
d. Disconnect both engine main wire connectors, then the igniter and theft deterrent horn electrical connectors.
e. Remove engine main wire from wire clamps.
f. Remove connector bracket, then disconnect wire clamp and P/S solenoid valve electrical connector.
g. Disconnect ground strap from cylinder block, then the P/S pressure switch electrical connector.
h. Disconnect ignition coil and noise filter electrical connectors, then remove cap and nut and disconnect alternator wire.
i. Disconnect engine wire from wire clamps, then the heater valve VSV vacuum hose from check valve.
j. Disconnect heater water hoses from heater water valve and water bypass valve.
k. Disconnect VSV electrical connector, then the ground strap from bracket on body.
l. Remove engine wire protector bolts, then the engine wire protector and engine wire clamp.
14. On models with manual transmission, remove transmission shift lever.
15. Disconnect ECM, ABS & TRAC ECU, TRAC ECU, connector cassette and A/C control assembly electrical connectors, Fig. 6.

16. Pull engine wire from passenger compartment.
17. Disconnect power steering pipe from engine, Fig. 7

18. Remove union bolt and two gaskets, then disconnect fuel inlet hose. Suspend hose union end upward.
19. Remove nut and disconnect starter wire, then disconnect starter wire from wire clamp.
20. Remove No. 2 Front exhaust pipe, then the exhaust pipe heat insulator.
21. Place matchmarks on both propeller shaft flanges, Fig. 8.

22. Remove two propeller shaft center support bearing set bolts and adjusting washers.
23. Remove four bolts, washers, nuts and propeller shaft.
24. On models with manual transmission, insert transmission oil plug tool No. 09325-20010, or equivalent, in transmission tail shaft to prevent oil leaks.
25. On models with automatic transmission, insert transmission oil plug tool No. 09325-40010, or equivalent, in transmission tail shaft to prevent oil leaks.
26. On models with manual transmission, remove transmission shift lever, then disconnect clutch release cylinder and groundstrap from transmission.
27. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect transmission control rod.
28. Attach suitable engine hoist chain to engine hangers, then remove two engine to front suspension crossmembernuts.
29. Remove four bolts, four nuts and rear engine mounting member.
30. Lift engine with transmission out of vehicle, then place on suitable stand.
31. Separate engine and transmission.
32. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten to specifications.
33. On models with air bag system, rearm airbag system as outlined under Technician Safety Information. If audio system was disabled, activate as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
