Heater Core: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and disable airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
2. Set temperature control switch to max cool.
3. Remove A/C unit as follows:
a. Discharge and recover refrigerant as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE.
b. Remove engine as described under ENGINE MECHANICAL/COMPONENT REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR/ENGINE.
c. Disconnect water hose, vacuum hose and electrical connector from water valve, then remove both retaining bolts and water valve.
d. Remove brake tube bracket mounting bolts from dash panel.
e. Remove evaporator as described under EVAPORATOR CORE.
f. Disconnect water hoses from heater core, then remove insulator retainer.
g. Remove instrument panel reinforcement and floor carpet.
h. Remove rear air ducts and heater to resistor No. 3 duct.
i. Remove connector bracket from underside of blower motor.
j. Disconnect electrical connectors, then remove six retaining bolts and A/C unit.
4. Remove two screws and cover plate, Fig. 31.
5. Remove heater core from case.
6. Reverse procedure to install.
