Removal and Installation

Front Axle:






REMOVAL
1. Remove front wheel.
Torque: 103 Nm (76 ft. lbs.).
2. Remove front brake caliper and disc.
a. Remove the two bolts and the brake caliper from the steering knuckle.
Torque: 118 Nm (87 ft. lbs.).
b. Support the brake caliper securely.
c. Place matchmarks on the disc and axle hub.
d. Remove the two screws and disc.
3. Check bearing backlash and axle hub deviation.





a. Using a dial indicator near the center of the axle hub and check the backlash in the bearing shaft direction.
Maximum backlash: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch).
If the backlash exceeds the maximum, replace the bearing.
b. Using a dial indicator, check the deviation at the surface of the axle hub outside the hub bolt.
Maximum deviation: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch).
If the deviation exceeds the maximum, replace the axle hub.
4. Remove Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor from steering knuckle. Remove the bolt, and disconnect the sensor from the steering knuckle.
Torque: 7.8 Nm (69 inch lbs.).
5. Disconnect tie rod end from steering knuckle.
a. Remove the cotter pin and nut.
Torque: 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.).





b. Using Special Service Tool (SST) 09628-10011 or equivalent, disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
6. Remove steering knuckle.
a. Remove the upper side of the cotter pin and nut.
Torque: 103 Nm (76 ft. lbs.).
b. Remove the lower side of the clip and nut.
Torque: 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.).





c. Using SST 09628-62011 or equivalent, remove the steering knuckle from the upper and lower suspension arms.

INSTALLATION
Installation is in the reverse order of removal. After installation, check the ABS speed sensor signal and front wheel alignment.
