AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAK

'99 - '00 ES 300 & RX 300

Introduction
In some cases the U140E, F transaxle in 1999 - 2000 model year ES 300 and RX 300 vehicles may leak automatic transmission fluid from the counter gear speed sensor bolt hole. The repair procedure for this condition is described in this bulletin.

Applicable Vehicles
^ 1999 - 2000 model year ES 300 & RX 300 produced before the VINs listed.

Applicable Warranty *:
This repair is covered under the Lexus Powertrain Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 72 months or 70,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.

Repair Procedure





1. Remove the counter gear speed sensor and "O"-ring.

2. Clean the surfaces of the retaining bolt and the bolt hole.

CAUTION:
Use protective eye-wear when spraying solvents and compressed air.

A. Blow compressed air into the bolt hole to remove automatic transmission fluid.

B. Clean the bolt hole by spraying a spray cleaner (brake cleaner, etc.) into the hole.

C. Clean the bolt threads with a wire brush, then use a spray cleaner to remove debris.

D. Repeat the above steps (A through C) 2 to 3 times.

3. Install the speed sensor.

A. Coat the "o"-ring with automatic transmission fluid and install it on the sensor.





B. Lightly apply 1344 sealer (P/N 08833-00080) to the bolt threads and the bolt hole on the transaxle case, as shown.

4. Install the speed sensor with the retaining bolt.

Torque: 11.3 Nm (115 kgf cm, 8 ft)

5. Let the vehicle sit for at least 30 minutes without running the engine.

6. Start and run the vehicle for several minutes. Check for automatic transmission fluid leakage around the bolt hole.
