Ignition Timing: Testing and Inspection
INSPECTION1. REMOVE V-BANK COVER
a. Using a 5 mm hexagon wrench, remove the 3 cap nuts.
b. Loosen the V-bank cover fastener counterclockwise.
c. Remove the V-bank cover.
2. WARM UP ENGINE
Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.
3. CONNECT LEXUS HAND-HELD TESTER OR OBDII SCAN TOOL
a. Connect the LEXUS hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool to the DLC3.
b. Please refer to the LEXUS hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool operator's manual for further details.
4. CONNECT TIMING LIGHT TO ENGINE
Connect the clip of a timing light to the black/red lead wire.
5. CHECK IDLE SPEED
a. Race the engine speed at 2,500 rpm for approximately 90 seconds.
b. Check the idle speed.
Idle speed: 700 ± 50 rpm
6. INSPECT IGNITION TIMING
a. Using SST, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the DLC1.

b. Using a timing light, check the ignition timing.
Ignition timing: 8 - 12° BTDC @ idle (Transmission in neutral position)
c. Remove the SST from the DLC1.

7. FURTHER CHECK IGNITION TIMING
Ignition timing: 10 - 25° BTDC @ idle (Transmission in neutral position)
HINT: The timing mark moves in a range between 10° and 25°.
8. DISCONNECT TIMING LIGHT FROM ENGINE
9. DISCONNECT LEXUS HAND-HELD TESTER OR OBDII SCAN TOOL
10. REINSTALL V-BANK COVER
a. Using a 5 mm hexagon wrench, install the V-bank cover with the 3 cap nuts.
b. Press down the V-bank cover fastener.
