Removal and Installation









POWER TILT AND POWER TELESCOPIC STEERING COLUMN
REMOVAL
1. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL PAD

NOTICE: If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, DTCs will be recorded.





a. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
b. 2UZ-GE:
Remove the steering wheel lower No. 2 and No. 3 covers.
c. 3UZ-FE:
Remove the steering wheel No. 2 cover and pad switch modulator cover.
d. Using a torx socket wrench, loosen the 2 torx screws.

HINT: Loosen the 2 screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.





e. Pull the wheel pad from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.

CAUTION:
^ When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.
^ Never disassemble the wheel pad.

NOTICE: When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.

2. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL
a. Disconnect the connector.
b. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
c. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly.





d. Using SST, remove the wheel.
SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)
3. REMOVE UPPER AND LOWER COLUMN COVERS
Remove the 3 screws, column upper and lower covers.
4. REMOVE COMBINATION SWITCH WITH SPIRAL CABLE
a. Disconnect the 4 connectors.
b. Disconnect the airbag connector.
c. Remove the 3 screws and combination switch with spiral cable.
5. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE

NOTICE: Do not disassemble the spiral cable or apply oil to it.

6. REMOVE NO. 1 UNDER COVER
a. Remove the 3 screws.
b. Disconnect the DLC3.
c. Disconnect the connectors and remove the No. 1 under cover.
7. REMOVE FINISH PLATE AND END PAD
8. REMOVE NO. 1 SAFETY PAD
a. Remove the 2 screws and disconnect the hood lock release lever from the No. 1 safety pad.
b. Remove 4 pad set bolts and screw and No. 1 safety pad.
9. REMOVE HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT NO. 7





10. DISCONNECT INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and control valve shaft.
b. Loosen the bolt "A" and remove the bolt "B" and disconnect the intermediate shaft assembly.
11. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the connectors.
b. Remove the brake pedal return spring.
c. Loosen the hole cover clamp.
d. Remove the 4 column assembly set nuts and steering column assembly.





12. REMOVE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
Remove the bolt "A" and intermediate shaft assembly.
13. REMOVE DUST COVER
14. 3UZ-FE: REMOVE STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR
Remove the 2 screws and steering pad switch modulator.

INSTALLATION
1. 3UZ-FE:
INSTALL STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR
Install the steering pad switch modulator with the 2 screws.
2. INSTALL DUST COVER
3. INSTALL INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
Temporarily install the intermediate shaft assembly with the bolt





4. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
a. Install the steering column assembly with the 4 column assembly set nuts.
Torque: 25 Nm (260 kgf-cm, 19 ft. lbs.)
b. Tighten the hole cover clamp.
c. Install the brake pedal return spring.
d. Connect the connectors.





5. CONNECT INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and control valve shaft.
b. Install the bolt "B" and torque the bolt "A".
Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)
6. INSTALL HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT NO. 7
7. INSTALL NO. 1 SAFETY PAD
a. Install the No. 1 safety pad with the 4 pad set bolts and screw.
b. Connect the hood lock release lever with the 2 screws.
8. INSTALL FINISH PLATE AND END PAD
9. INSTALL NO. 1 UNDER COVER
a. Connect the connectors.
b. Connect the DLC3.
c. Install the No. 1 under cover with the 3 screws.
10. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE
11. INSTALL COMBINATION SWITCH WITH SPIRAL CABLE
a. Install the combination switch with spiral cable with the 3 screws.
b. Connect the airbag connector.
c. Connect the 4 connectors.
12. INSTALL UPPER AND LOWER COLUMN COVERS
Install the upper and lower column cover with the 3 screws.





13. CENTER SPIRAL CABLE
a. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
b. Turn the spiral cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn.
c. Then rotate the spiral cable clockwise about 3 turns to align the mark.

HINT: The spiral cable will rotate about 3 turn, to either left or right of the center.

14. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL
a. Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
b. Install the wheel set nut.
Torque: 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.)
c. Connect the connector.





15. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL PAD

NOTICE:
^ Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new ones.
^ Make sure the wheel pad is installed to the specified torque.
^ If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.
^ When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and are not pinched between other parts.

a. Connect the airbag connector.
b. Install the steering wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the torx screw is caught on the screw case.
c. Using a torx socket wrench, torque the 2 screws.
Torque: 8.8 Nm (90 kgf-cm, 78 inch lbs.)
d. 2JZ-GE:
Install the steering wheel lower No 2 and No. 3 covers.
e. 3UZ-FE:
Install the steering wheel lower No. 2 cover and pad switch modulator cover.
16. CHECK STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
