Cooling System: Testing and Inspection

ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

CAUTION: When the engine coolant is hot, do not loosen and remove the radiator cap.

1. CHECK ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL
a. Check that the engine coolant level of the reservoir tank is between LOW and FULL line. If the engine coolant level is low, check engine coolant leak and add engine coolant to the reservoir tank up to FULL line.
Coolant: TOYOTA long life coolant or equivalent
2. CHECK ENGINE COOLANT QUALITY
If the engine coolant is dirty, replace it.
3. CHECK ENGINE COOLANT LEAK
a. Fill the radiator with engine coolant and attach a radiator tester.
b. Pump it to 137 kPa (1.4 kgf/cm2, 19.9 psi).
c. Check that the pressure does not drop.
If the pressure drops, check the radiator cap operation and find out the engine coolant leak point.
4. INSPECT RADIATOR CAP

NOTICE: Perform the followings when using a radiator cap tester.
- If the radiator cap is dirty, wash it.
- Coat the radiator cap valves with engine coolant.

- Keep the tester at an angle of over 30° above the horizontal.

a. Set a radiator tester to the radiator cap.
b. Slowly pump the tester and check that air is coming from the vacuum valve.
Pump speed: 1 push for 3 seconds or more and constant pumping
c. Pump the tester and measure the relief valve opening pressure.
Pump speed: 1 push within 1 second

NOTICE: This pump speed is for the first pump only (in order to close the vacuum valve).
After this, the pump speed can be reduced.

Relief valve opening pressure

HINT: If the opening pressure is less than minimum, replace the radiator cap.
