Title:
IGNITION SWITCH DIFFICULT TO TURN
DUE TO STEERING LOCK

Models:
'04 LS 430

October 6, 2004

Introduction
The steering column of the LS 430 incorporates a steering wheel lock to prevent steering operation should someone attempt to move the car without the ignition key. Under normal parking conditions a customer may randomly experience a locking of the steering wheel.

Unlike a conventional ignition interlock system in which the locking pawl is operated by a mechanical linkage, the ignition interlock pawl on a SMART key system is operated by an electrically driven motor. This difference requires a two-step operation to release a locked steering column. When the wheel is locked, it is necessary to push and hold the ignition switch first, then rock (slight turning motion in both directions) the steering wheel to allow the steering lock pawl to disengage. The recommended procedure is shown below.

When starting the engine, the ignition switch may seem stuck in the "LOCK" position. To free it, push and hold the ignition switch (do no try to turn the ignition switch), then rock the steering wheel until it releases.

Should a customer feel that the steering wheel locks too frequently, it may be possible to reduce the chance of steering lock by indexing the steering column shaft lock position by following the procedure provided in this bulletin.
