On-Vehicle Inspection
ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION1. INSPECT AIR-FUEL RATIO COMPENSATION SYSTEM
a. Check the heated oxygen sensor output voltage (waveform)
b. Bank 1 sensor 1, bank 2 sensor 1:
Check for malfunctions in the heated oxygen sensor system (air-fuel ratio compensation system), including the circuit and all other related areas
c. Bank 1 sensor 2, bank 2 sensor 2: Check for malfunctions in the heated oxygen sensor system (air-fuel ratio compensation system), including the circuit and all other related areas
2. INSPECT FUEL CUT OFF RPM
a. Increase the engine speed to at least 3,000 rpm.
b. Using a sound scope, check the injector operation noise when the accelerator pedal is released.
OK: When accelerator pedal is released, injector operation noise stops momentarily and then starts again soon after.
3. INSPECT EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM
a. Start the engine. Disconnect the vacuum hose as shown in the illustration.
b. Set the hand-held tester to ACTIVE TEST mode and select EVAP VSV. Check that a vacuum occurs at the VSV port.
c. Exit ACTIVE TEST mode and reconnect the vacuum hose.
d. Set the hand-held tester to ECU DATA MONITOR mode and select EVAP VSV. Check the EVAP VSV operation.
e. Warm up the engine and drive the vehicle. Check that the EVAP VSV changes from OFF to ON.
4. INSPECT EVAP SYSTEM LINE
a. Warm up the engine to the normal operating temperature and stop the engine.
b. Install a vacuum gauge to the EVAP service port on the purge line.
c. w/ Hand-held tester: Perform forced driving of the EVAP VSV.
1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
2. Start the engine.
3. Push the hand-held tester main switch ON.
4. Using the tester, enter ACTIVE TEST mode and operate the EVAP VSV.
d. w/o Hand-held tester: Perform forced driving of the EVAP VSV.
1. Disconnect the connector of the EVAP VSV.
2. Connect the battery positive (+) and negative (-) leads to the EVAP VSV terminals.
3. Start the engine.
e. Check the vacuum while the engine is idling.
Vacuum: Maintains at 0.368 to 19.713 in.Hg (5 to 268 in.Aq) for over 5 seconds.
HINT: If the vacuum does not change, the hose connecting the VSV to the service port is loose or blocked, or the VSV is malfunctioning.
f. w/ Hand-held tester:
Finish the forced driving of the EVAP VSV.
1. Stop the engine.
2. Disconnect the hand-held tester from the DLC3.
g. w/o Hand-held tester:
Finish the forced driving of the EVAP VSV.
1. Stop the engine.
2. Disconnect the battery�s positive (+) and negative (-) leads from the EVAP VSV terminals.
3. Connect the connector of the EVAP VSV.
h. Disconnect the vacuum gauge from the EVAP service port on the purge line.
i. Connect a pressure gauge to the EVAP service port on the purge line.
j. Check the pressure.
1. Close the air drain hose with a hose clipper or similar tool, as shown in the illustration.
2. Apply pressure 0.993 to 1.141 in.Hg (13.5 to 15.5 in. Aq) to the EVAP service port and wait 2 minutes. Check the pressure.
Standard: After 2 minutes of applying pressure, the gauge indicates over 0.567 to 0.648 in.Hg (7.7 to 8.8 in.Aq).
HINT: If pressure could not be specified, the hose connecting the VSV, charcoal canister and fuel tank is loose, or the VSV is open.
3. Remove the fuel tank cap while pressure is being applied, and check that the pressure decreases.
HINT: If the pressure does not decrease when the fuel tank cap is removed, the hose connecting the service port to the fuel tank is blocked.
k. Disconnect the pressure gauge from the EVAP service port on the purge line.
5. CHECK AIRTIGHTNESS IN FUEL TANK AND FILLER PIPE
a. Disconnect the EVAP line hose from the charcoal canister.
1. Pinch the EVAP line hose connector on the areas labeled A in the illustration. Then pull out the connector.
b. Allow the internal pressure in the fuel tank to be 4 kPa (41 gf/sq.cm, 0.58 psi).
c. Check that the internal pressure of the fuel tank remains the same for 1 minute.
d. Check the connections between each hose and pipe.
e. Check the installed parts on the fuel tank. If any parts are damaged or abnormal, replace the fuel tank and filler pipe.
f. Reconnect the EVAP line hose to the charcoal canister.
6. INSPECT FUEL CUT OFF VALVE AND FILL CHECK VALVE
a. Disconnect the purge line hose and EVAP line hose from the charcoal canister.
b. Install the cap to the air drain hose.
c. Apply 4 kPa (41 gf/sq.cm, 0.58 psi) of pressure to the purge port and check that there is ventilation in the EVAP line hose.
HINT: It is necessary to check the amount of fuel in the fuel tank. When the fuel tank is full, the float valve of the fill check valve is closed and no air can pass through.
d. Check if the purge line hose and EVAP line hose are clogged. If not clogged, replace the fuel cut off valve and fill check valve.
e. Reconnect the purge line hose and EVAP line hose to the charcoal canister.
7. CHECK AIR INLET LINE
a. Disconnect the air inlet line hose from the charcoal canister.
b. Check that there is ventilation in the air inlet line hose.
c. Reconnect the air inlet line hose to the charcoal canister.
8. VISUALLY INSPECT HOSES, CONNECTIONS AND GASKETS
a. Check for cracks, leaks or damage.
HINT: Removal or problems with the engine oil dipstick, filler cap, PCV hose and other components may cause the engine to run improperly.
9. INSPECT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR
a. Bank 1 sensor 1, bank 2 sensor 1: Disconnect the oxygen sensor connector.
b. Measure the heater resistance of the sensor.
If the result is not as specified, replace the sensor.
c. Bank 1 sensor 2, bank 2 sensor 2:
Disconnect the oxygen sensor connector.
d. Measure the resistance of the sensor.
If the result is not as specified, replace the sensor.
