Rear Axle Shaft
REPLACEMENT
HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side.
^ The procedures listed are for the LH side.
^ A bolt without a torque specification is shown in the standard bolt chart.
1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
a. Remove the 10 bolts and ornament.
b. Remove the 5 nuts and wheel.
2. LOOSEN REAR AXLE SHAFT LH NUT
3. DISCONNECT DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY REAR LH
a. Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the brake cylinder from the axle carrier.
b. Support the brake cylinder securely.
4. REMOVE REAR DISC
5. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE ASSEMBLY
6. DISCONNECT PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY NO.3
7. DISCONNECT TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
8. DISCONNECT REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO.1 LH
9. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY LH
10. DISCONNECT UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY REAR LH
a. Using SST, disconnect the upper suspension arm from the axle carrier.

NOTICE:
^ Be careful not to damage the dust cover.
^ Support the axle carrier.
11. DISCONNECT REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO.2 LH
12. REMOVE REAR WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR NO.2 LH
a. Using a screwdriver, pry out the dust deflector.
13. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH
a. Remove the 2 bolts and nuts.
b. Mount the axle carrier in a vise.
HINT: Use a set of soft jaws in the vise to protect the axle carrier.
NOTICE: Do not excessively tighten the vise.
c. Using SST, remove the axle shaft from the axle carrier.
d. Remove the backing plate.
e. Using SST, remove the bearing inner race from the axle shaft.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the axle shaft.
14. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH SNAP RING
a. Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring.
15. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH BEARING
a. Using SST and a press, press out the shaft bearing from the axle carrier.

16. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT LH BEARING
a. Using SST and a press, press in a new axle shaft bearing to the axle carrier.

17. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT LH SNAP RING
a. Using snap ring pliers, install the snap ring to the axle carrier.
18. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT LH
a. Install the backing plate with the 2 bolts and nuts.
Torque: 59 Nm (600 kgf-cm, 43 ft. lbs.)
b. Using SST and a press, press in the axle shaft to the axle carrier.

19. INSTALL REAR WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR NO.2 LH
a. Align the speed sensor installation hole of the dust deflector and that of the axle carrier.
b. Using SST and a hammer, tap in a new dust deflector to the axle carrier.

20. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO.2 LH
21. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY REAR LH
22. CONNECT TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
23. FULLY TIGHTEN UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY REAR LH
24. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY LH
25. CONNECT REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO.1 LH
26. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY NO.3
27. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE ASSEMBLY
28. INSPECT BEARING BACKLASH
a. Using a dial indicator near the center of the axle shaft, check the backlash in the bearing shaft direction.
Maximum: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch)
If the backlash is greater than the maximum, replace the bearing.
29. INSPECT AXLE HUB DEVIATION
a. Using a dial indicator, check the deviation at the surface of the axle shaft outside the hub bolt.
Maximum: 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch)
If the backlash is greater than the maximum, replace the bearing.
30. INSTALL REAR DISC
31. CONNECT DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY REAR LH
a. Connect the brake cylinder to the steering knuckle with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 104 Nm (1,065 kgf-cm, 77 ft. lbs.)
32. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE SHOE LINING THICKNESS
33. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO.2 LH
34. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
a. Install the wheel with the 5 nuts.
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
b. Install the ornament with the 10 bolts.
Torque: 20 Nm (204 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.)
35. INSPECT AND ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT
36. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
