REMOVAL
1. PRECAUTION, refer to Restraint Systems Service Precautions.
2. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
3. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
4. REMOVE CONSOLE UPPER PANEL GARNISH FRONT
5. REMOVE CONSOLE UPPER PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
6. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL END LH
7. REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
8. REMOVE FRONT DOOR OPENING TRIM COVER LH
9. REMOVE INSTRUMENT SIDE PANEL LH
10. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY NO.1
11. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSEMBLY NO.1
12. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL AIRBAG ASSEMBLY LOWER NO.1
13. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.2
14. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.3
15. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL PAD
16. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.
(b) Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and main shaft assembly.
(c) Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly.
SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05011)
17. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER
(a) Remove the 3 screws.
(b) Detach the 2 claws to remove the steering column cover lower.
NOTICE:
Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch.
(c) Detach the 4 clips to separate the steering column cover upper.
(d) Detach the claw to remove the steering column cover upper.
18. REMOVE TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH
(a) Disconnect the connector.
(b) Using a screwdriver, detach the claw and pull out the tilt and telescopic switch.
NOTICE:
Pushing on the claw too hard will break the claw.
HINT:
Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
19. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the clamp and turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly
20. REMOVE AIR DUCT NO.1
(a) Detach the 2 claws and remove the air duct No.1.
21. REMOVE STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY
NOTICE:
Make sure that the steering link assembly is centered before performing this step.
(a) Loosen bolt (A) and remove bolt (B), then slide the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly.
HINT:
^ Do not remove bolt (A).
^ Do not disconnect the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the power steering link assembly.
(b) Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and the power steering link assembly.
(c) Separate the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the power steering link assembly.
(d) Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and the steering actuator assembly.
(e) Remove the bolt and the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the steering actuator assembly.
22. REMOVE MAIN SHAFT LOWER DUST COVER
(a) Remove 2 bolts and main shaft lower dust cover.
23. SEPARATE STEERING ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY
(a) Disconnect the connector and separate the wire harness clamp from the steering actuator assembly.
(b) Put matchmarks on the steering actuator assembly and the main shaft.
(c) Remove the bolt and separate the steering actuator assembly.
24. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
(a) Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps.
(b) Remove the 4 nuts and steering column assembly from the instrument panel reinforcement assembly.
25. REMOVE STEERING ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the clamp from the steering column hole shield.
(b) Put matchmarks on the steering actuator assembly and steering column hole shield.
(c) Remove the steering actuator assembly.
DISASSEMBLY
1. REMOVE STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY
(a) Using a center punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
(b) Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 in.) drill, drill a hole in the 2 bolts.
(c) Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and steering lock actuator assembly from the steering column assembly.
2. REMOVE MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU
REASSEMBLY
1. INSTALL MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU
2. INSTALL STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY
(a) Temporarily install the steering lock actuator assembly with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
(b) Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.
INSTALLATION
1. HANDLING PRECAUTIONS FOR STEERING ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY
^ Be careful that the No.2 seal lip or boot does not turn outward while carrying or installing the steering actuator assembly. If installing a new steering actuator assembly, make sure that the spiral center lock pin is securely inserted.
^ Do not use the steering actuator assembly if it has been dropped.
2. INSTALL STEERING ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY
(a) Make sure that the power steering link assembly is centered.
(b) Install the steering actuator assembly.
(1) If installing a new steering actuator assembly : Install the steering actuator assembly with the white paint on the upper surface of the spiral case facing down.
NOTICE:
Do not pull out the center lock pin.
(2) If reinstalling the removed steering actuator assembly:
1. Slowly turn the spiral case clockwise until it locks.
2. Turn the spiral case two turns counterclockwise from the lock position.
3. Align the slit of the sliding yoke with the alignment mark ([triangle]).
4. Install the steering actuator assembly with the white paint on the upper surface of the spiral case facing down.
5. Align the matchmarks on the steering actuator assembly and the column hole shield.
NOTICE:
Do not turn the actuator body and the spiral case.
(c) Install the clamp to the steering column hole shield.
3. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the steering column assembly with the 4 nuts.
Torque: 26 N*m (260 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf)
(b) Connect the connectors and wire harness clamps to the steering column assembly.
4. CONNECT STEERING ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY
(a) Align the matchmarks on the steering actuator assembly and the main shaft.
(b) Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)
5. INSTALL STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY
NOTICE:
Make sure that the steering link assembly is centered before performing this step.
(a) Align the matchmarks on the steering actuator assembly and the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly.
(b) Temporarily install the bolt.
HINT:
Do not tighten the bolt.
(c) Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and the power steering link assembly.
(d) Install bolt (A) and tighten the 2 bolts.
Torque: 35 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)
6. INSTALL MAIN SHAFT LOWER DUST COVER
(a) Connect the connector and wire harness clamp to the steering actuator assembly.
HINT:
If a new steering actuator assembly was installed, pull out the center lock pin and tighten the clamp of the actuator after this step.
(b) Install the main shaft lower dust cover with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 7.5 N*m (77 kgf*cm, 66 in.*lbf)
7. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
8. INSTALL TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly to the steering column assembly with the clamp.
9. INSTALL TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH
(a) Attach the claw to install the tilt and telescopic switch.
(b) Connect the connector.
10. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER
(a) Attach the 4 clips to install the steering column cover upper onto the instrument panel cluster finish panel.
(b) Attach the claw to install the steering column cover upper.
(c) Attach the 2 claws to install the steering column cover lower.
NOTICE:
Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch.
(d) Using a socket wrench (+), install the 3 screws.
Torque: 2.0 N*m (20 kgf*cm, 18 in.*lbf)
11. ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
12. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
(a) Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and steering main shaft assembly.
(b) Install the steering wheel assembly set nut.
Torque: 50 N*m (510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf)
13. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
14. INSTALL AIR DUCT NO.1
(a) Attach the 2 claws to install the air duct No.1
15. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL AIR BAG ASSEMBLY LOWER NO.1
16. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSEMBLY NO.1
17. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY NO.1
18. INSTALL INSTRUMENT SIDE PANEL LH
19. INSTALL FRONT DOOR OPENING TRIM COVER LH
20. INSTALL FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
21. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL END LH
22. INSTALL CONSOLE UPPER PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
23. INSTALL CONSOLE UPPER PANEL GARNISH FRONT
24. INSPECT HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY
25. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL PAD
26. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.3
27. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.2
28. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
29. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
30. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
Some systems need initialization when disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal.
31. PERFORM VARIABLE GEAR RATIO STEERING SYSTEM CALIBRATION
