REMOVAL
1. PRECAUTION
(a) Precaution, refer to Restraint Systems Service Precautions.
2. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
3. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
CAUTION:
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
4. REMOVE FRONT CONSOLE UPPER PANEL GARNISH
5. REMOVE CONSOLE UPPER PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
6. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL END LH
7. REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
8. REMOVE FRONT DOOR OPENING TRIM COVER LH
9. REMOVE INSTRUMENT SIDE PANEL LH
10. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL NO. 1 UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
11. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL NO. 1 SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSEMBLY
12. REMOVE DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY
13. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL NO. 2 COVER LOWER
14. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL NO. 3 COVER LOWER
15. REMOVE STEERING PAD
16. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the steering wheel set nut.
(b) Put matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
(c) Using SST, remove the steering wheel.
SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05011)
17. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER
(a) Remove the 3 screws.
(b) Detach the 2 claws to remove the steering column cover lower.
NOTICE:
Do not damage the tilt & telescopic switch.
(c) Detach the 4 clips.
(d) Detach the claw to remove the steering column cover upper.
18. REMOVE TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH
(a) Disconnect the connector.
(b) Using a screwdriver, detach the claw and pull out the tilt and telescopic switch.
NOTICE:
Pushing on the claw too hard will break the claw.
HINT:
Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
19. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the clamp and turn signal switch with spiral cable from the steering column.
20. REMOVE NO. 1 AIR DUCT
(a) Detach the 2 claws and remove the No. 1 air duct.
21. SEPARATE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
(a) Loosen bolt (A) and remove bolt (B), then slide the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft.
HINT:
^ Do not remove bolt (A).
^ Do not disconnect the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft from the power steering link.
(b) Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and the power steering link.
(c) Separate the steering sliding yoke from the power steering link.
(d) Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft.
(e) Remove the bolt and the steering sliding yoke from the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft.
22. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the bolt and disconnect the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft.
(b) Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps.
(c) Remove the 4 nuts and steering column from the instrument panel reinforcement.
23. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the clamp from the steering column hole shield.
(b) Remove the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft.
DISASSEMBLY
1. REMOVE STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY
(a) Using a center punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
(b) Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 in.) drill, drill a hole in the 2 bolts.
(c) Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and steering lock actuator from the steering column.
2. REMOVE MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU
REASSEMBLY
1. INSTALL MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU
2. INSTALL STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY
(a) Temporarily install the steering lock actuator with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
(b) Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.
INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft.
(b) Install the clamp to the steering column hole shield.
2. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the steering column with the 4 nuts.
Torque: 26 N*m (260 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf)
(b) Connect the connectors and wire harness clamps to the steering column.
(c) Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and power steering link.
(d) Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)
3. CONNECT NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
(a) Connect the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft to the steering main shaft.
(b) Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)
(c) Install the clamp to the steering column hole shield.
4. INSTALL STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft and steering sliding yoke.
(b) Temporarily install the bolt.
HINT:
Do not tighten the bolt.
(c) Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and the power steering link.
(d) Install bolt (A) and tighten the 2 bolts.
Torque: 35 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)
5. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
6. INSTALL TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the turn signal switch with spiral cable to the steering column with the clamp.
7. INSTALL TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH
(a) Attach the claw to install the tilt and telescopic switch.
(b) Connect the connector.
8. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER
(a) Attach the 4 clips to install the steering column cover upper onto the instrument panel cluster finish panel.
(b) Attach the claw to install the steering column cover upper.
(c) Attach the 2 claws to install the steering column cover lower.
NOTICE:
Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch.
(d) Using a screwdriver, install the 3 screws.
Torque: 2.0 N*m (20 kgf*cm, 18 in.*lbf)
9. ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
10. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
(a) Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel and steering main shaft.
(b) Install the steering wheel set nut.
Torque: 50 N*m (510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf)
11. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
12. INSTALL NO. 1 AIR DUCT
(a) Attach the 2 claws to install the No. 1 air duct.
13. INSTALL DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY
14. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL NO. 1 SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSEMBLY
15. INSTALL NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
16. INSTALL INSTRUMENT SIDE PANEL LH
17. INSTALL FRONT DOOR OPENING TRIM COVER LH
18. INSTALL FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
19. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL END LH
20. INSTALL CONSOLE UPPER PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
21. INSTALL FRONT CONSOLE UPPER PANEL GARNISH
22. INSPECT HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY
23. INSTALL STEERING PAD
24. INSTALL NO. 3 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER
25. INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER
26. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
27. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
(a) Inspect the SRS warning light.
28. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
(a) Perform initialization.
NOTICE:
Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
