Parking Brake System: Service and Repair

PARKING BRAKE ASSEMBLY

COMPONENTS:





DISASSEMBLY

HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the LH side and RH side.
^ The procedures listed below are for the LH side.

1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
2. DISCONNECT REAR DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY LH





3. REMOVE REAR DISC
(a) Place matchmarks on the disc and axle hub.
(b) Release the parking brake, and then remove the disc.

HINT: If the disc cannot be removed easily, turn the shoe adjuster until the disc turns freely.





4. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT LH
(a) Using needle-nose pliers, remove the 2 shoe return springs.
(b) Remove the strut.

5. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET
(a) Using needle-nose pliers, remove the tension springs.
(b) Remove the screw set.





6. REMOVE NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Slide the shoe to remove the 2 cups, shoe hold-down spring, pin and shoe.





7. REMOVE NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Slide the shoe to remove the 2 cups, shoe hold-down spring, pin and shoe.
(b) Disconnect the No. 3 parking brake cable from the parking brake shoe lever.





8. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER LH
(a) Using a screwdriver, remove the C-washer and shim.
(b) Remove the lever.

REASSEMBLY

HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the LH side and RH side.
^ The procedures listed below are for the LH side.

1. APPLY HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE
(a) Apply high temperature grease to the contact surface of the shoe and backing plate.





2. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER LH
(a) Install the lever.
(b) Install the correct size shim.
(c) Install a new C-washer.

3. RECHECK CLEARANCE BETWEEN PARKING BRAKE SHOE AND LEVER





4. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Connect the No. 3 parking brake cable to the parking brake shoe lever.
(b) Install the shoe with the 2 cups, shoe hold-down spring and pin.





5. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Install the shoe with the 2 cups, shoe hold-down spring and pin.





6. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET
(a) Apply high temperature grease to the adjusting bolt.
(b) Install the screw set.
(c) Using needle-nose pliers, install the tension spring.

7. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT LH
(a) Apply high temperature grease to the contact surface of the strut and shoe return spring.
(b) Install the strut.





(c) Using needle-nose pliers, install the 2 shoe return springs.

8. CHECK PARKING BRAKE INSTALLATION
(a) Check that each part is installed properly.





NOTICE: There should be no oil or grease adhering to the friction surface of the shoe lining and disc.

9. INSTALL REAR DISC
(a) Align the matchmarks and install the disc.

HINT: When replacing the disc with a new one, select the installation position where the disc has the minimum runout.

10. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE
(a) Temporarily install the hub nuts.





(b) Remove the hole plug, and then turn the adjuster to expand the shoe adjuster until the disc locks.
(c) Contract the shoe adjuster until the disc can rotate smoothly.
Standard: Return 8 notches
(d) Check that the shoe has no brake drag.
(e) Install the hole plug.
(f) Depress the parking brake pedal with a force of 147 N (15 kgf, 33 lbf).
(g) Drive the vehicle at approximately 50 km/h (31 mph) for approximately 400 m (0.25 miles).

NOTICE: Drive the vehicle on a safe, level and dry road.

(h) Repeat the previous 2 steps 2 or 3 times.

11. CONNECT REAR DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY LH
12. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
(a) Install the wheel with the 5 nuts.
Torque: 103 N*m (1,050 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf)
(b) Install the ornament with the 10 bolts.
Torque: 20 N*m (204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)

13. CHECK PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL
14. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL
