FRONT AXLE HUBCOMPONENTS (Part 1):

ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. CHECK FRONT AXLE HUB BEARING
(a) Remove the front wheel.
(b) Remove the 2 bolts and front disc brake cylinder.
(c) Support the brake cylinder securely.
(d) Remove the front brake disc.
(e) Using a dial indicator near the center of the axle hub, check the backlash in the bearing shaft direction.
Maximum backlash: 0.05 mm (0.0020 in.)
If the backlash is greater than the maximum, replace the bearing.
(f) Using a dial indicator, check the deviation at the surface of the axle hub outside the hub bolt.
Maximum deviation: 0.05 mm (0.0020 in.)
If the deviation is greater than the maximum, replace the axle hub.
REMOVAL
HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side.
^ The procedures listed below are for the LH side.
^ A bolt without a torque specification is shown in the standard bolt chart.
1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL
2. DISCONNECT FRONT SPEED SENSOR LH
3. DISCONNECT FRONT DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Remove the 2 bolts and brake cylinder from the steering knuckle.
(b) Support the brake cylinder securely.
4. REMOVE FRONT BRAKE DISC
5. REMOVE STEERING KNUCKLE ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Remove the clip and nut of the upper side.
(b) Using SST, disconnect the steering knuckle from the upper suspension arm.

(c) Remove the 2 bolts and steering knuckle from the lower ball joint.
6. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB GREASE CAP LH
(a) Using a screwdriver, pry out the grease cap from the steering knuckle.
7. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB NUT LH
(a) Clamp the axle hub in a soft jaw vise.
NOTICE: Close the vise until it holds the hub bolt. Do not tighten excessively.
(b) Using a chisel and hammer, loosen the staked part of the lock nut.
(c) Using a 36 mm socket wrench, remove the lock nut.
8. REMOVE FRONT SKID CONTROL ROTOR
9. DISCONNECT FRONT DISC BRAKE DUST COVER LH
(a) Remove the 4 bolts and shift the brake dust cover toward the outside.
10. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Using SST, remove the axle hub from the steering knuckle.

11. REMOVE BEARING INNER RACE
(a) Using SST, remove the inner race from the axle hub.

12. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB OIL SEAL LH
(a) Using SST, remove the oil seal from the steering knuckle.

13. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB HOLE SNAP RING LH
(a) Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring.
14. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB BEARING LH
(a) Using SST and a press, press out the bearing from the steering knuckle.

INSTALLATION
HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side.
^ The procedures listed below are for the LH side.
^ A bolt without a torque specification is shown in the standard bolt chart.
1. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB BEARING LH
(a) Using SST and a press, press in a new bearing to the steering knuckle.
SST 09309-36010, 09950-60020 (09951-00720), 09950-70010 (09951-07150)
NOTICE: If the inner race and balls come loose from the bearing outer race, make sure to install them in the same position as before.
2. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB HOLE SNAP RING LH
(a) Using snap ring pliers, install the snap ring.
3. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB OIL SEAL LH
(a) Install the inner race (outside).
(b) Using SST and a hammer, tap in a new oil seal until it is flush with the end surface of the steering knuckle.

(c) Coat the oil seal lip with MP grease.
4. INSTALL FRONT DISC BRAKE DUST COVER LH
(a) Install the brake dust cover to the steering knuckle with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 8.3 N*m (85 kgf*cm, 74 in.*lbf)
5. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Using SST and a press, press in the axle hub to the steering knuckle.

6. INSTALL FRONT SKID CONTROL ROTOR
NOTICE: Do not scratch the serrations of the sensor rotor.
7. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB NUT LH
(a) Using a 36 mm socket wrench, install a new axle hub lock nut.
Torque: 199 N*m (2,030 kgf*cm, 147 ft.*lbf)
(b) Using a chisel and hammer, stake the lock nut.
8. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB GREASE CAP LH
(a) Using a screwdriver and hammer, tap in the grease cap to the steering knuckle.
9. INSTALL STEERING KNUCKLE ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Connect the steering knuckle to the lower ball joint with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 113 N*m (1,150 kgf*cm, 83 ft.*lbf)
(b) Connect the steering knuckle to the upper suspension arm with the nut.
Torque: 87 N*m (887 kgf*cm, 64 ft.*lbf)
(c) Install the clip.
10. INSTALL FRONT BRAKE DISC
11. CONNECT FRONT DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Connect the brake cylinder to the steering knuckle with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 118 N*m (1,203 kgf*cm, 87 ft.*lbf)
12. CONNECT FRONT SPEED SENSOR LH
13. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL
Torque: 103 N*m (1,050 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf)
14. INSPECT AND ADJUST FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT
(a) Inspect and adjust the front wheel alignment.
15. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
(a) Check the ABS speed sensor signal.
