REAR AXLE HUBCOMPONENTS (Part 1):

ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. CHECK REAR AXLE SHAFT BEARING
(a) Remove the rear wheel.
(b) Remove the 2 bolts and front disc brake cylinder.
(c) Support the brake cylinder securely.
(d) Remove the rear brake disc.
(e) Using a dial indicator near the center of the axle shaft, check the backlash in the bearing shaft direction.
Maximum backlash: 0.05 mm (0.0020 in.)
If the backlash is greater than the maximum, replace the bearing.
(f) Using a dial indicator, check the deviation at the surface of the axle shaft outside the hub bolt.
Maximum deviation: 0.07 mm (0.0028 in.)
If the deviation is greater than the maximum, replace the bearing.
REMOVAL
HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side.
^ The procedures listed below are for the LH side.
^ A bolt without a torque specification is shown in the standard bolt chart.
1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
2. LOOSEN REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT LH
(a) Remove the cotter pin and rear axle lock nut plate.
(b) Loosen the nut.
3. DISCONNECT REAR DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the brake cylinder from the axle carrier.
(b) Support the brake cylinder securely.
4. REMOVE REAR DISC
5. DISCONNECT SPEED SENSOR REAR LH
6. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the parking brake assembly.
7. DISCONNECT NO. 3 PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY
(a) Disconnect the parking brake cable.
8. DISCONNECT TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Remove the nut.
(b) Using SST, disconnect the toe control link from the axle carrier.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the dust cover.
9. REMOVE REAR NO. 1 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Remove the bolt and nut, and disconnect the suspension arm.
10. DISCONNECT REAR UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Remove the nut.
(b) Using SST, disconnect the upper control arm from the axle carrier.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the dust cover.
(c) Connect the rear axle carrier to the upper control arm, and loosely install the nut.
(d) Using a plastic-faced hammer, tap the rear drive shaft assembly's tip to detach the rear drive shaft assembly.
(e) Remove the nut and disconnect the upper control arm.
11. DISCONNECT REAR NO. 2 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Place matchmarks on the adjusting cam and rear suspension arm.
(b) Remove the nut, No. 2 camber adjusting cam and No. 1 camber adjusting cam. Then disconnect the rear suspension arm and remove the axle carrier assembly.
12. REMOVE REAR NO. 2 WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR LH
(a) Using a screwdriver, pry out the dust deflector.
13. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH
(a) Remove the 2 bolts and nuts.
(b) Using SST, remove the axle shaft from the axle carrier.

(c) Using SST, remove the bearing inner race from the axle shaft.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the axle shaft.
14. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT SNAP RING LH
(a) Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring.
15. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT BEARING LH
(a) Using SST and a press, press out the shaft bearing from the axle carrier.

INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT BEARING LH
(a) Using SST and a press, press in a new axle shaft bearing to the axle carrier.

2. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT SNAP RING LH
(a) Using snap ring pliers, install the snap ring to the axle carrier.
3. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT LH
(a) Install the backing plate with the 2 bolts and nuts.
Torque: 59 N*m (602 kgf*cm, 44 ft.*lbf)
(b) Using SST and a press, press in the axle shaft to the axle carrier.

4. INSTALL REAR NO. 2 WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR LH
(a) Align the speed sensor installation hole of the dust deflector and that of the axle carrier.
(b) Using SST and a hammer, tap in a new dust deflector to the axle carrier.

5. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 2 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Attach the spline of the rear drive shaft to the rear axle carrier and insert the rear drive shaft assembly.
(b) Install the rear suspension arm to the rear axle carrier.
(c) Align the matchmarks of the camber adjust cam and rear axle carrier, and loosely install the nut.
6. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Connect the upper control arm to the rear axle carrier, and loosely install a new nut.
7. CONNECT TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Connect the toe control link to the rear axle carrier, and install a new nut.
Torque: 59 N*m (602 kgf*cm, 44 ft.*lbf)
8. TIGHTEN REAR UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY LH
Torque: 108 N*m (1,101 kgf*cm, 80 ft.*lbf)
9. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 1 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Connect the rear suspension arm and loosely install the bolt and a new nut.
10. CONNECT NO. 3 PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY
11. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the parking brake.
12. INSTALL REAR DISC
13. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Connect the brake cylinder to the axle carrier with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 104 N*m (1,061 kgf*cm, 77 ft.*lbf)
14. INSPECT AND ADJUST PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL
(a) Inspect and adjust the parking brake pedal travel.
15. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT LH
(a) While depressing the brake pedal, install the nut.
Torque: 289 N*m (2,947 kgf*cm, 213 ft.*lbf)
(b) Install the lock cap and a new cotter pin.
NOTICE: If the holes for the cotter pin are not aligned, tighten the nut an additional 60°.
16. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
Torque: 103 N*m (1,050 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf)
17. STABILIZE SUSPENSION
(a) Lower the vehicle.
(b) Press down on the vehicle several times to stabilize the suspension.
18. TIGHTEN REAR NO. 2 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY LH
Torque: 110 N*m (1,122 kgf*cm, 81 ft.*lbf)
19. TIGHTEN REAR NO. 1 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY LH
Torque: 75 N*m (765 kgf*cm, 55 ft.*lbf)
20. INSPECT AND ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT
(a) Inspect and adjust the rear wheel alignment.
21. INSPECT ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
(a) Inspect the ABS speed sensor signal.
