REMOVAL
NOTICE:
^ If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch ON, DTCs will be recorded.
^ When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
2. FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
3. REMOVE SWITCH AND VOLUME CASE
(a) Apply protective tape to the steering wheel boss cover lower as shown in the illustration.
(b) Using a screwdriver, detach the 3 claws and remove the case.
HINT: Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
4. REMOVE STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR
(a) Remove the 2 screws.
(b) Remove the modulator and then disconnect the connector.
5. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER
(a) Using a screwdriver, remove the cover.
6. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL PAD ASSEMBLY
NOTICE: If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, DTCs will be recorded.
(a) Using a T30 "TORX" socket wrench, loosen the 2 "TORX" screws until the groove along the screw circumference is caught on the screw case.
(b) Pull the steering wheel pad from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connectors.
(c) Disconnect the terminal.
NOTICE: When removing the steering wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.
CAUTION:
^ When placing the steering wheel pad down, make sure the outer surface of the steering wheel pad faces upward.
^ Never disassemble the steering wheel pad.
7. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the steering wheel set nut.
(b) Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
(c) Using SST, remove the steering wheel.

8. REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
9. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER LOWER
(a) Remove the 3 screws and steering column cover lower.
10. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER UPPER
11. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
12. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY
13. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSEMBLY
14. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL AIRBAG ASSEMBLY LOWER
15. REMOVE NO. 4 HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT
(a) Remove the 3 clips and duct.
16. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
(a) Place matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
(b) Loosen the bolt labeled A, remove the bolt labeled B and disconnect the steering sliding yoke.
(c) Disconnect the connectors.
(d) Remove the brake pedal return spring.
(e) Loosen the hole cover clamp.
(f) Remove the 2 column set bolts, 2 column set nuts and steering column.
17. REMOVE STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the bolt labeled A and steering sliding yoke.
DISASSEMBLY
1. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
(a) Place matchmarks on the No. 2 intermediate shaft and main shaft.
(b) Remove the bolt and No. 2 intermediate shaft.
2. REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY COIL
(a) Remove the 2 screws and ignition protector.
(b) Disconnect the connector.
(c) Remove the screw and transponder key coil, key cylinder light.
3. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET ASSEMBLY UPPER
(a) Using a centering punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
(b) Using a 4 to 5 mm (0.16 to 0.20 in.) drill, drill into the 2 bolts.
(c) Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and column upper bracket.
4. REMOVE KEY CYLINDER
(a) Turn the ignition switch to ACC.
(b) Using a screwdriver, push down the stop pin of the cylinder, and pull out the key cylinder.
5. REMOVE KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID
(a) Remove the 2 screws and key unlock warning switch (with key interlock solenoid).
6. REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER
(a) Remove the screw and transponder key amplifier.
7. REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the 2 screws and ignition switch.
8. REMOVE TILT STEERING SLIDER SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Using a hexagon wrench, remove the 4 bolts, 2 washers and tilt steering slider.
(b) Remove the 4 bushes and 2 plates from the tilt steering slider.
9. REMOVE MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU
(a) Disconnect the connector.
(b) Remove the 2 screws and ECU.
INSPECTION
1. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
2. INSPECT KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID
REASSEMBLY
HINT: A bolt without a torque specification is shown in the standard bolt chart.
1. INSTALL MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU
(a) Install the multiplex ECU with the 2 screws.
(b) Connect the connector.
2. INSTALL TILT STEERING SLIDER SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Install 2 new plates and 4 bushes to the tilt steering slider as shown in the illumination.
HINT: Install the bushings with their cuts facing downward.
(b) Using a hexagon wrench, install the tilt steering slider with the 2 washers and 4 bolts.
Torque: 23 N*m (230 kgf*cm, 17 ft.*lbf)
HINT:
^ When replacing a tilt steering slider with new one, apply grease on the removed tilt steering slider to the shaft of the new tilt steering slider.
^ Install the tilt steering slider with the bolt portion of the tilt slider faced downward.
^ Do not allow grease to contact the thread part of the bolt. This will prevent the bolt from slipping.
3. INSTALL IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the ignition switch with the 2 screws.
4. INSTALL TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER
(a) Install the transponder key amplifier with the screw.
5. INSTALL KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID
(a) Install the key interlock solenoid (with key unlock warning switch) with the 2 screws.
6. INSTALL KEY CYLINDER
(a) Make sure the ignition switch is on ACC.
(b) Install the key cylinder.
7. INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION
(a) Check that the steering lock mechanism operates properly.
8. INSTALL TRANSPONDER KEY COIL
(a) Install the transponder key coil and key cylinder light with the screw.
(b) Connect the connector.
(c) Install the ignition protector with the 2 screws.
9. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN BRACKET ASSEMBLY UPPER
(a) Install the column upper bracket with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
(b) Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.
10. INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
(a) Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and main shaft.
(b) Install the steering intermediate shaft to the main shaft with the bolt.
Torque: 35 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)
INSTALLATION
HINT: A bolt without a torque specification is shown in the standard bolt chart.
1. INSTALL STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Temporarily install the steering sliding yoke with the bolt.
2. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the steering column with the 2 column set bolts and 2 column set nuts.
Torque: 25 N*m (260 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf)
(b) Install the bolt to tighten the hole cover clamp.
(c) Install the brake pedal return spring.
(d) Connect the connectors.
3. INSTALL STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
(b) Install the bolt labeled B and tighten the bolt labeled A.
Torque: 35 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)
4. INSTALL NO. 4 HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT
(a) Install the 3 clips to install the duct.
5. INSTALL NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL AIRBAG ASSEMBLY LOWER
6. INSTALL NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSEMBLY
7. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
8. INSTALL TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the turn signal switch with spiral cable with the 3 screws.
(b) Connect the airbag connector.
(c) Connect the 4 connectors.
9. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER UPPER
10. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER LOWER
(a) Install the steering column cover lower with the 3 screws.
11. INSTALL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
12. CENTER SPIRAL CABLE
13. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
(a) Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
(b) Install the wheel set nut.
Torque: 35 N*m (357 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)
(c) Connect the connector.
14. INSTALL STEERING PAD ASSEMBLY
NOTICE:
^ Never use airbag parts removed from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new ones.
^ Make sure the wheel pad is installed with the specified torque.
^ If the steering pad is dropped or there are cracks, dents or other defects on the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.
^ When installing the steering pad, make sure that the wiring does not interfere with other parts and that they are not pinched between other parts.
(a) Connect the terminal.
(b) Connect the connectors to the steering pad.
(c) Install the steering wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the "TORX" screws is caught on the screw case.
(d) Use a T30 "TORX" socket wrench, tighten the 2 "TORX" screws.
Torque: 8.8 N*m (90 kgf*cm, 78 in.*lbf)
15. INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER
16. INSTALL STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR
(a) Connect the connector.
(b) Install the steering pad switch modulator with the 2 screws.
17. INSTALL SWITCH AND VOLUME CASE
(a) Attach the 3 claws to install the switch and volume case.
18. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
19. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
20. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
(a) Inspect the SRS warning light.
21. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
(a) Perform initialization.
NOTICE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
