MONITOR RESULT

The purpose of the monitor result (mode 06) is to allow access to the results for on-board diagnostic monitoring tests of specific components/systems that are not continuously monitored. Examples are catalyst, evaporative emission (EVAP) and thermostat.

The monitor result allows the OBD II scan tool to display the monitor status, test value, minimum test limit and maximum test limit. These data are displayed after the vehicle has been driven to run the monitor.

When the test value is not between the minimum test limit and maximum test limit, the ECM (PCM) interprets this as a malfunction. When the component is not malfunctioning, if the difference of the test value and test limit is very small, the component will malfunction in the near future.

Perform the following instruction to view the monitor status. Although this instruction reference the Lexus diagnostic tester, it can be checked using a generic OBD II scan tool. Refer to your scan tool operator's manual for specific procedures.

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

P0136, P0137, P0138, P0156, P0157 and P0158

- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

- Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.

- Clear the DTCs DTC Check / Clear.

- Turn the power switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

- Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on [A].

- Put the engine in inspection mode Inspection Mode Procedure.

- Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher [B].

- Drive the vehicle at 47 to 75 mph (75 to 120 km/h) for 10 minutes or more [C].

CAUTION:
When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.

- Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes / Pending.

- Read the pending DTC [D].

HINT
- If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
- Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.

- Input the DTC: P0136, P0137, P0138, P0156, P0157 or P0158.

- Check the DTC judgment result.

- If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN, perform steps [C] though [D] again.

P0139 or P0159

- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

- Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.

- Clear the DTCs DTC Check / Clear.

- Turn the power switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

- Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on [A].

- Put the engine in inspection mode Inspection Mode Procedure.

- Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher [B].

- Drive the vehicle at 37 mph (60 km/h), and then decelerate the vehicle by releasing the accelerator pedal for 5 seconds or more to perform the fuel-cut [C].

- Input the DTC: P0139 or P0159.

- Check the DTC judgment result.

HINT
If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN, move the shift lever to second gear and then perform [C] and [D] again.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT
The Techstream only:

Malfunctioning areas can be identified by performing the Control the Injection Volume for A/F Sensor function provided in the Active Test. The Control the Injection Volume for A/F Sensor function can help to determine whether the Air-Fuel Ratio (A/F) sensor, Heated Oxygen (HO2) sensor and other potential trouble areas are malfunctioning.

The following instructions describe how to conduct the Control the Injection Volume for A/F Sensor operation using the Techstream.

- Put the engine in inspection mode Inspection Mode Procedure.
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
- Turn the Techstream on.
- Warm up the engine.
- Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the Injection Volume for A/F Sensor.
- Perform the Control the Injection Volume for A/F Sensor operation with the engine in an idling condition (press the RIGHT or LEFT button to change the fuel injection volume).
- Monitor the voltage outputs of the A/F and HO2 sensors (AFS Voltage B1S1 and O2S B1S2 or AFS Voltage B2S1 and O2S B2S2) displayed on the Techstream.
HINT
- The Control the Injection Volume for A/F Sensor operation lowers the fuel injection volume by 12.5% or increases the injection volume by 25%.
- Each sensor reacts in accordance with increases in the fuel injection volume.

NOTICE:
The Air-Fuel Ratio (A/F) sensor has an output delay of a few seconds and the Heated Oxygen (HO2) sensor has a maximum output delay of approximately 20 seconds.

- Following the Control the Injection Volume for A/F Sensor procedure enables technicians to check and graph the voltage outputs of both the A/F and HO2 sensors.

- To display the graph, enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor / AFS Voltage B1S1 or AFS Voltage B2S1 and O2S B1S1 or O2S B2S2; then press the graph button on the Data List view.

HINT
- Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction Freeze Frame Data.
- If the OX1B wire from the ECM connector is short-circuited to the +B wire, DTC P0136 will be set.
- If the OX2B wire from the ECM connector is short-circuited to the +B wire, DTC P0156 will be set.
