Removal





STEERING COLUMN: STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY: REMOVAL

CAUTION:
Some of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing Service Precautions.

1. PRECAUTION

(a) Precaution Steering System.

2. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD

3. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

(a) Disable the auto tilt away function by changing the customize parameter Programming and Relearning.

NOTICE:
Record the current customize parameter setting (whether the auto tilt away function is enabled or disabled) in order to restore the current setting after finishing this operation.

HINT
Performing the above operation disables the auto tilt away function when the engine switch is turned off.

(b) Turn the power switch on (IG). Operate the tilt and telescopic switch to fully extend and lower the steering column assembly.

(c) Turn the power switch off and disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

CAUTION:
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

NOTICE:
When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected Repair Instruction - Initialization.

4. REMOVE DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY

HINT
Refer to the instructions for Removal of the driver side knee airbag assembly Removal.

5. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER Removal

6. REMOVE NO. 3 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER Removal

7. REMOVE STEERING PAD Removal

8. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY

(a) Remove the steering wheel set nut.





(b) Put matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.

(c) Using SST, remove the steering wheel.

9. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER

(a) Remove the 3 screws.





(b) Detach the 2 claws to remove the steering column cover lower.

NOTICE:
Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch.

(c) Detach the 4 clips.





(d) Detach the claw to remove the steering column cover upper.

10. REMOVE TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH

(a) Disconnect the connector.





(b) Using a screwdriver, detach the claw and pull out the tilt and telescopic switch.

NOTICE:
Pushing on the claw too hard will break the claw.

HINT
Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

11. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY

(a) Remove the clamp and turn signal switch with spiral cable from the steering column.





12. REMOVE NO. 1 AIR DUCT

(a) Detach the 2 claws and remove the No. 1 air duct.

13. REMOVE STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY

NOTICE:
Make sure that the steering link is centered before performing this step.

(a) Loosen the bolt (A) and remove the bolt (B), then slide the steering sliding yoke.





HINT
* Do not remove the bolt (A).
* Do not disconnect the steering sliding yoke from the power steering link.
(b) Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and the power steering link.





(c) Separate the steering sliding yoke from the power steering link.

(d) Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and the steering actuator.





(e) Remove the bolt and the steering sliding yoke from the steering actuator.

14. REMOVE MAIN SHAFT LOWER DUST COVER





(a) Remove the 2 bolts and main shaft lower dust cover.

15. SEPARATE STEERING ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY





(a) Disconnect the connector and separate the wire harness clamp from the steering actuator assembly.





(b) Put matchmarks on the steering actuator assembly and main shaft.

(c) Remove the bolt and separate the steering actuator assembly.

16. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY

(a) Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps.

(b) Remove the 4 nuts and steering column from the instrument panel reinforcement.





17. REMOVE STEERING ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY





(a) Remove the clamp from the steering column hole shield.





(b) Put matchmarks on the steering actuator assembly and steering column shield.

(c) Remove the steering actuator assembly.
