2GR-FSE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0365, P0367, P0368, P0390, P0392, P0393: Camshaft Position Sensor "B" Circuit (Bank 1)

DESCRIPTION

The exhaust camshaft's Variable Valve Timing (VVT) sensor consists of a magnet and MRE (Magnetic Resistance Element).

The exhaust camshaft has a sensor plate with 3 teeth on its outer circumference.

When the exhaust camshaft rotates, changes occur in the air gaps between the 3 teeth and MRE, which affects the magnet. As a result, the resistance of the MRE material fluctuates. The VVT sensor converts the exhaust camshaft rotation data to pulse signals, uses the pulse signals to determine the camshaft angle, and sends it to the ECM.

- Reference: Inspection using an oscilloscope

HINT
- The correct waveform is as shown.
- EV1+ and EV2+ stand for the VVT sensor signal, and NE+ stands for the CKP sensor signal.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

If no signal is transmitted by the VVT sensor despite the engine revolving, or the rotations of the camshaft and the crankshaft are not synchronized, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction of the sensor.

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.

3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure).

4. Turn the engine switch off and wait for 30 seconds.

5. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on [A].

6. Start the engine.

7. Idle the engine for 10 seconds or more [B].

8. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.

9. Read the DTC [C].

HINT
- If a DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If a DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.

11. Input the DTC: P0365, P0367, P0368, P0390, P0392 or P0393.

12. Check the DTC judgment result.

HINT
- If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
- If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
- If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN, perform step [B] again.

13. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.

14. Check the DTC judgment result.

HINT
- If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
- If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.

15. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN and no DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

HINT
- If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

- Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction Freeze Frame Data.

- Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder*.

*: The No. 1 cylinder is the cylinder which is farthest from the transmission.

- Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.

PROCEDURE

1. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (SENSOR POWER SOURCE)

(a) Disconnect the E58 or E66 VVT sensor connector.

(b) Turn the engine switch on (IG).

(c) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard voltage:

NG -- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (VVT SENSOR FOR EXHAUST SIDE - ECM)
OK -- Continue to next step.

2. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (VVT SENSOR FOR EXHAUST SIDE - ECM)

(a) Disconnect the E58 or E66 VVT sensor connector.

(b) Disconnect the E45 ECM connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard resistance (Check for open):

Standard resistance (Check for short):

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- Continue to next step.

3. CHECK VVT SENSOR FOR EXHAUST SIDE (SENSOR INSTALLATION)

(a) Check the VVT sensor installation.

OK:

Sensor is installed correctly.

NG -- SECURELY REINSTALL SENSOR
OK -- Continue to next step.

4. CHECK EXHAUST CAMSHAFT

(a) Check the teeth of the camshaft.

NG -- REPLACE EXHAUST CAMSHAFT
