Parking Brake System: Adjustments





PARKING BRAKE: PARKING BRAKE SYSTEM: ADJUSTMENT

1. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE LEVER TRAVEL (for Manual Transmission)

(a) Pull firmly the parking brake lever.

(b) Release the parking brake lever lock and return it to its off position.

(c) Slowly pull the parking brake lever using the specified force, and count the number of clicks.





Parking brake lever travel:

5 to 7 notches at 200 N (20 kgf, 45.0 lbf)

If the parking brake lever travel is not as specified, adjust the parking brake shoe clearance and parking brake lever travel.

2. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL (for Automatic Transmission)

(a) Fully depress the parking brake pedal to engage the parking brake.

(b) Depress the parking brake pedal again to disengage the parking brake.

(c) Slowly depress the parking brake pedal using the specified force, and count the number of clicks.

Parking brake pedal travel:

7 to 9 clicks at 300 N (31 kgf, 67.5 lbf)





If the parking brake pedal travel is not as specified, adjust the parking brake shoe clearance and parking brake pedal travel.

3. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE AND PARKING BRAKE LEVER TRAVEL (for Manual Transmission)

(a) Remove the rear console panel sub-assembly Removal.

(b) Completely release the parking brake lever.

(c) Loosen the lock nut and No. 1 wire adjusting nut to completely release the parking brake cable.

(d) Remove the rear wheel.

(e) Temporarily install the hub nuts.

(f) Remove the shoe adjusting hole plug.

(g) Turn the shoe adjuster and expand the shoe until the disc locks.

(h) Turn and contract the shoe adjuster until the disc can rotate smoothly.

Standard:

Return 7 notches.

(i) Check that there is no brake drag against the shoe.

(j) Install the shoe adjusting hole plug.

(k) Turn the No. 1 wire adjusting nut until the parking brake lever travel is corrected to be within the specified range.

Parking brake lever travel:

5 to 7 notches at 200 N (20 kgf, 45.0 lbf)

(l) Using a wrench or an equivalent tool, hold the No. 1 wire adjusting nut and tighten the lock nut.

Torque : 5.5 Nm (56 kgf-cm, 49 in-lbf)

(m) Operate the parking brake lever 3 to 4 times, and check the parking brake lever travel.

(n) Check that there is no brake drag against the shoe.

(o) Remove the hub nuts.

(p) Install the rear wheel.

Torque : 103 Nm (1050 kgf-cm, 76 ft-lbf)

(q) Install the rear console panel sub-assembly Installation.

4. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE AND PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL (for Automatic Transmission)

(a) Remove the No. 1 instrument panel under cover sub-assembly Removal.

(b) Completely release the parking brake pedal.

(c) Loosen the lock nut and No. 1 wire adjusting nut to completely release the parking brake cable.

(d) Remove the rear wheel.

(e) Temporarily install the hub nuts.

(f) Remove the shoe adjusting hole plug.

(g) Turn the shoe adjuster and expand the shoe until the disc locks.

(h) Turn and contract the shoe adjuster until the disc can rotate smoothly.

Standard:

Return 7 notches.

(i) Check that there is no brake drag against the shoe.

(j) Install the shoe adjusting hole plug.

(k) Turn the No. 1 wire adjusting nut until the parking brake pedal travel is corrected to be within the specified range.

Parking brake pedal travel:

7 to 9 notches at 300 N (31 kgf, 67.5 lbf)

(l) Using a wrench or an equivalent tool, hold the No. 1 wire adjusting nut and tighten the lock nut.

Torque : 7.0 Nm (71 kgf-cm, 62 in-lbf)

(m) Operate the parking brake pedal 3 to 4 times, and check the parking brake pedal travel.

(n) Check that there is no brake drag against the shoe.

(o) Remove the hub nuts.

(p) Install the rear wheel.

Torque : 103 Nm (1050 kgf-cm, 76 ft-lbf)

(q) Install the No. 1 instrument panel under cover sub-assembly Installation.

5. INSPECT BRAKE WARNING LIGHT

(a) When operating the parking brake pedal or parking brake lever, check that the brake warning light illuminates.

Standard:

The brake warning light always illuminates at the first click.
