Fluid - A/T: Service and Repair

AA80E AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION / TRANSAXLE: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID: ADJUSTMENT

1. BEFORE REFILL TRANSMISSION

This transmission requires Toyota Genuine ATF WS transmission fluid.

After servicing the transmission, you must refill the transmission with the correct amount of fluid.

Maintain the vehicle in a horizontal position while adjusting the fluid level.

If the entire transmission, transmission pan, drain plug, valve body and/or torque converter is removed and installed, proceed to Fill Transmission Pan with Fluid.

If the transmission hose, output shaft oil seal and/or radiator is replaced, remove the refill plug, and then proceed to Fill Transmission.

2. FILL TRANSMISSION PAN WITH FLUID

(a) Remove the refill plug and overflow plug.

(b) Fill the transmission through the refill hole until fluid begins to trickle out from the overflow tube.

(c) Reinstall the overflow plug.

3. FILL TRANSMISSION

(a) Fill the transmission with the amount of fluid listed in the table below.

(b) Reinstall the refill plug to prevent the fluid from spilling out.

Standard Capacity:

HINT
If the amount of fluid listed in the table cannot be added, perform the next step.

(c) When the amount of fluid listed in the table cannot be added:

(1) Install the refill plug.

(2) Allow the engine to idle with the air conditioning off.

(3) Move the shift lever through the entire gear range to circulate fluid.

(4) Wait 30 seconds with the engine idling.

(5) Stop the engine.

(6) Remove the refill plug and add fluid.

(7) Reinstall the refill plug.

4. CHECK FLUID TEMPERATURE

NOTICE:
The fluid temperature can be confirmed by checking the P shift indicator in the meter or using the Techstream. It is necessary to change to fluid temperature detection mode.

HINT
The fluid temperature should be less than 30°C (86°F) before starting the engine.

(a) When using the Techstream:

(1) Turn the engine switch off.

(2) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(3) Turn the engine switch on (IG).

NOTICE:
* Do not start engine yet.
* Check that electrical systems such as the air conditioning system, audio system and lighting system are off.

(4) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / ECT / Active Test / Connect the TC and TE1.

(5) Select the item Data List / A/T Oil Temperature 1.

(6) Check A/T Oil Temperature 1.

NOTICE:
* If the fluid temperature is below 35°C (95°F), proceed to the next step. (Recommended ATF temperature 42°C (108°F) or less)
* If the fluid temperature is 42°C (108°F) or more, turn the engine switch off and wait until the fluid temperature drops below 35°C (95°F).

(7) Push the active test menu: Connect the TC and TE1 / ON.

(8) Start the engine.

(b) When not using the Techstream (using P shift indicator):

(1) Using SST, connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3.

SST : 09843-18040

(2) Start the engine.

NOTICE:
Check that electrical systems such as the air conditioning system, audio system and lighting system are off.

HINT
Indicator lights of the meter blink to output DTCs when terminals TC and CG are connected.

(c) Slowly move the shift lever from P to M. Then return the shift lever to P.

(d) Move the shift lever to D, then quickly move it back and forth between N and D (at least once every 1.5 seconds) for at least 6 seconds. This will activate fluid temperature detection mode.

HINT
While moving the shift lever between N and D a few times, the N indicator in the combination meter will not illuminate for 4 seconds even if the shift lever is moved to N. This indicates that transmission fluid temperature detection mode has been entered.

(e) When using the Techstream:

(1) Return the shift lever to P and press "OFF" on the Active Test display.

(f) When not using the Techstream:

(1) Return the shift lever to P and disconnect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG).

(g) Allow the engine to idle until the fluid temperature reaches 35°C (95°F).

(h) The P indicator turns on again when the fluid temperature reaches 35°C (95°F) and blinks when it exceeds 42°C (108°F).

5. CHECK FLUID LEVEL

NOTICE:
The fluid temperature must be between 35°C (95°F) and 42°C (108°F) to check the fluid level.

(a) When the indicator light (P) turns on, lift the vehicle up immediately.

P shift Indicator Indication of ATF Temperature

NOTICE:
Perform fluid level inspection while the indicator light is on.

(b) Remove the overflow plug with the engine idling.

(c) Check that the fluid comes out of the overflow tube.

If fluid does not come out, proceed to the next step.

If fluid comes out, wait until the overflow slows to a trickle and proceed to Complete.

6. ADD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID

(a) Install the overflow plug.

(b) Stop the engine.

(c) Remove the refill plug.

(d) Add 0.4 liters (0.42 US qts, 0.35 Imp. qts) of fluid.

(e) Allow the engine to idle and wait for 10 seconds.

(f) Repeat Check Fluid Level.

7. COMPLETE

(a) Install the overflow plug and a new gasket.

Torque : 20 Nm (204 kgf-cm, 15 ft-lbf)

(b) Stop the engine.

(c) Using SST, install the refill plug and a new gasket.

SST : 09961-01270

without SST - Torque : 39 Nm (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft-lbf)

with SST - Torque : 18 Nm (188 kgf-cm, 14 ft-lbf)

NOTICE:
* The "with SST" torque value is effective when using SST with a fulcrum length of 200 mm (7.87 in.) and torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 180 mm (7.09 in.).
* If a torque wrench with a length other than specified is used with SST, the torque value must be recalculated Service Precautions.
* The converted torque value is effective when SST is parallel to the torque wrench.

(d) Check for fluid leaks.
