Applicability

Introduction

Some 2011 and 2012 Lexus models may exhibit a condition where the Smart Key system is inoperative when another vehicle's Smart key is in or near the vehicle. The following functions may also be affected: wireless remote operation, Smart access, and Smart start. The combination meter multi-information display may show the message: "Key not detected" when attempting to start vehicle and when driving. Follow the repair procedures in this TSIB to address this condition.

NOTE

^ With the above listed condition present, starting vehicle can still be achieved by placing the key fob on the start button, pressing brake pedal, and pushing the start button.

^ Obtain ALL customer's registered keys and check FCC ID's printed on them. If keys have FCC ID's ending in "AB", vehicle qualifies for repair.

Repair Procedure

1. Install updated Door Control Receiver. Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS) applicable model and model year Repair Manual:

2. Program Smart Key system using "3-step procedure" listed below.

NOTE

Identify FCC ID codes on original and new Smart Key fob plastic cases. Key fobs with FCC ID ending in "B" identifies original AM keys. Do NOT mix original AM keys and new FM keys. Keep them in separate locations.

NOTE

^ This procedure is required to ensure all new FM keys are programmed and all original AM keys are erased from history. Since erase function clears out all previous keys, 3 steps are necessary.

^ Remove all RF transmitting devices before attempting to program system, including cell phones, freeway toll transmiffers, and other Smart keys. Make sure all other key fobs

^ are outside vehicle (at least 9.1 feet away from zone) except for the 1 key being used for programming at any given time.

^ It will be necessary to turn on the ignition by holding original AM (FCC: -AB) key over start button to begin step 1.

1. Add - This step programs one new FM key using the original AM key to authorize.

A. Enter Smart Code Registration utility for adding keys.

B. Authorize addition of FM key by first placing original AM key (FCC: -AB) on start button for one beep.

C. Add one new FM key by placing it above start button for first beep and on seat for second beep.

D. Close Smart Code Registration utility to complete step 1.

E. Remove all original AM keys from your work area. They are no longer needed.

2. Erase - This step erases all original AM key codes but retains the new FM key programming.

A. Enter Smart Code Erasure utility for erasing keys.

B. Authorize erasing of AM keys by placing new programmed FM key on start button for one beep.

C. Close Smart Code Erasure utility to complete step 2.

3. Add - This step programs the second new FM key to complete the set of two new keys.

A. Enter Smart Code Registration utility for adding keys.

B. Authorize addition of key by placing first new programmed FM key on start button for one beep.

C. Add second new FM key by placing above start button for first beep and on seat for second beep.

D. Add new FM flat key (or card key) if applicable by placing above start button for first beep and on seat for second beep. (Flat key not applicable to GX460)

E. Close Smart Code Registration utility to complete step 3.

Repair Completion

When repair is completed verify all Smart and wireless functions including power back door operation (if applicable). Final programmed keys should include 2 regular Smart Key fobs and 1 flat key (or key card) if applicable. None of the final programmed keys should have an FCC ID ending with the letters "AB".
